His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the
Sultan and Yang Dipertuan of Brunei Darussalam expressed Brunei
Darussalam’s desire for a peaceful settlement of the Iraqi crisis
through international diplomacy and dialogue. His Majesty made the
remarks at the Second Extraordinary Session of the Organisation of
Islamic Conference, OIC Summit, held in Doha, Qatar Wednesday.
His Majesty expressed appreciation for the opportunity to exchange
views on the critical situation facing the people of Iraq. In
highlighting the increasing threat of war and its disturbing
consequences, His Majesty cautioned that such a war will likely
generate lasting hostility on all sides and will harden any
terrorist agenda.
His Majesty added although the Middle East is far away, the region
is close to the Bruneians’ hearts, as it is the focus of their
faith. The region is also extremely important for Muslims and
non-Muslims all over the world. This, His Majesty said, has
profound social, economic, political and moral significance.
According to His Majesty, OIC stresses the need for international
law and diplomacy in all the region’s affairs.

His Majesty also stresses that a further war against Iraq
appears to be closer each day, adding that the prospects of its
grave consequences are deeply disturbing, said His Majesty. The
war, according to His Majesty, could do enormous damage to the
very foundations on which international, political, social and
economic systems have been built. It will probably lead to
unrest and heightened insecurity, stressed His Majesty. The war
is likely to provoke further divisions among the international
community.

His Majesty also stated that war will be a further setback in
efforts to find the key to the whole region’s peaceful future,
particularly in reference to finding a just and lasting end to
the suffering of the Palestinian people. His Majesty expressed
the view that war will bring renewed suffering to the civilians
of Iraq.
His Majesty also commended the latest response made by the
government of Iraq to comply with the demands made by the United
Nations weapons inspectors. His Majesty urged the members of
the Security Council to give the world more time for the process
of international law and diplomacy.
