Increased padi produce under new development plan

The production of padi has increased almost threefold in the past 5 years, from 208 metric ton in 1998 to 572 metric ton in 2002.  It means an increase of almost three times each hectare of padi field for every farmer.

The Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources, Dato Paduka Haji Idris stated this at the launching of the Padi Harvesting Ceremony 2003 held at Kampung Lamunin Barat Bukit Barun padi area in the Tutong District, Wednesday.  He said that under the country’s 8th National Development Plan, the government of His Majesty has allocated nearly B$2.4 million for the Agriculture Department to spend on farm facilities, water system, fertilizers and chemicals.

This is the third time the annual programme has been held.  Last year, it was held at Kampung Labi Dua in the Belait District, while Kampung Pedayan in Temburong was the host the year before.
