The Island
of Borneo is one of the world’s ‘hotspots’ for bio-diversity in the
world exceeded only by some areas in South America. Figures show
that there are about 220 different species of mammals in Borneo.
While in Brunei Darussalam, there are about three thousand 500
species of flowering plants that have been recorded, of which some
two thousand are trees.
The Vice Chancellor of University
Brunei Darussalam, Doctor Haji Ismail underlined this at the opening
of a workshop on botanical and zoological illustration, Wednesday.

Despite excitement over high
figures, which indicate vast bio-diversity, the Vice Chancellor
said that it is important to bear in mind that the figures are
probably unreliable. Since the actual numbers are still
unknown, initiatives have been undertaken by various parties
concerned in an effort to address the problem.
The four-day workshop offers
practical training or hands-on experience to participants in the
techniques of drawing to show the anatomical and morphological
features that were important in identifying different plants and
animal groups. It also provides participants, which consist of
Museum staff, Forestry, Fishery and Agriculture Departments, the
UBD, and schoolteachers to acquire new skills.
