MABBIM talks focus on maintaining value of Malay Language

The empowerment of language lies in the race of whom are using it, as well as many other external factors.  It does not lie on the language alone.

A speaker from Brunei Darussalam, Dr. Mataim Bakar in his research paper, says that it is a major concern that most of the Malays are more comfortable with the English Language.  This is obvious with the high demand of English-written magazines and newspapers in the country.  This can be seen as a threat to the value of the Malay Language.

Meanwhile, a speaker from Malaysia, Dato Doctor Haji Hassan Ahmad stressed that the value of language lies more on the influence and style of the user.  According to him, the MABBIM member countries need to develop the language, and not blindly embrace globalisation in all areas.

Indonesian speaker, Sutradji Calzoum Bachri added that poetry has played a contributory role in the modern world.  In reality, poetry is a nation’s asset in a region that has suffered changes in its cultural heritage.
