Talks on drug abuse delivered at Youth Camp

Over the last two months, 100 people have been arrested for the misuse of drugs, more than half of them men.  The statistic was revealed by an official from the Narcotic Control Bureau during a talk on the misuse of drugs among youth, presented to the participants of the Camping Programme for Invited Youth in the Brunei Muara District.

One of the participants of the programme, Awang Haji Mohd. Khairul Anuar Shah, 19, said that one of the main causes of youth getting involved in drugs was their desire to try, which results in them getting addicted to the substance.

Meanwhile, 16-year-old student at the Pengiran Muda Al- Muhtadee Billah College, Awangku Haji Abdul Rahman felt that on some occasions smoking could also lead an individual to turn to drugs.  He said young smokers are easily influenced by their parents and friends who also smoke. The bureau’s statistics show that there were more than four thousand people arrested from 1996 to 2002.  152 offenders were below fifteen years of age.

More than eighty youths from eleven mosques attended the youth campaign programme, which was organised by the Kampung Perpindahan Mata-Mata mosque.
