Every Muslim needs to read Al-Quran

Jawi writing has been in existence for centuries within the archipelago. Researchers have conceded its existence is hand in hand with the presence and development of Islam in this region.

At the recently held International Seminar on Jawi Writing, the State Mufti underlined that the Jawi Writing originated from the Arabic writing thus Arabic alphabets were moulded in the Malay Language writing system. The Jawi writing is one of the earliest writing to be discovered in this region based on its finding in Kedah in 2 hundred 90 Hijrah, Phan-Rang Vietnam in 4 hundred 31 Hijrah, Pekan, Pahang in four hundred and 19 Hijrah, Gersik, Indonesia in 4 hundred 75 Hijrah and in Brunei in the year 8 hundred and 28 Hijrah. This shows that the Jawi Writing has been introduced in this area earlier compared to the Romanic writing.

The calligraphy has influenced the writing system in this country since its presence until it has a special place in the upper level that made calligraphy an important part in the country’s philosophy. Jawi writing is closely related to the Islamic and language development in the archipelago. In the history of writing, including religious books in Malay language, Jawi writing becomes the nerve. As a concrete proof, in the Exhibition Hall of the Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah’s Collection, hundreds of manuscripts in various disciplines are found, including transcription, astronomy, medicals and others are all written in Jawi. The contribution of the Jawi writing in the malay nations is therefore in abundance, whether in religion, culture or art.

In his keynote during the seminar, Pehin Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Abdul Aziz also said that evaluations were made that the writing has play its major role in the development of religion in this area. This is apparent with the Islamic faith that every muslim needs to read Al-Quran, at least, the Al-Fatihah verse. They also need to read it correctly. In this relation, Jawi writing assists them in carry out the compulsory deed.

Most Malay Language have originated from the Arabic language. Writing them in Romanic caused differences and far diverted from the actual means. Therefore in producing similar pronunciation, transliteration was introduced.

However up to now, the transliteration question is still in the transition level, there has not been any full support to it. Publishers, writers and language bodies are now still puzzle with the unparallel transliteration guidance. While, transliteration researchers are not in line with the guideline. If the present transliteration is use in the Quran reading, there is a concern that the system will be classified as a diversion system to some of the original Quranic words that in turn affect the pronunciation and meaning simultaneously.
