The upgrading of Jalan Subok is entering the second phase

 

A project to widen a number of roads in the Brunei Muara District under the 8th National Development Plan is progressing as scheduled.


The upgrading of public road involved widening of Jalan Subok that is being undertaken into two phases. The first phase is already completed and opened to traffic two years ago. It covers a three kilometre stretch of the road including the construction of roundabouts at junction of Jalan Sungai Akar and Muara Link road. The first phase cost twelve million dollars.

The second phase of the project is still in progress and is expected to be completed by the end of this year. The works involved widening the width of the existing road from five metres to more than seven meter-wide including the construction of a two metre-wide side-walk at both sides of the road. The project also includes the construction of retaining walls at some points along the road.

 

Aside from offering convenience to road users, the project is aimed at upgrading road safety standards, and at the same time reconstructing the Sungai Subok drainage. The motorists are advised to adhere to the road signs and proceed with caution at the vicinity of the project site.

 

Over 150 thousand hand phone users need to register their pre-paid SIM card

 

The DSTCom and B-Mobile, the local hand phone service providers has began registering pre-paid SIM card subscribers and the move are expected to involve over 150 thousand mobile phone costumers in the country.


A new regulatory regime in the use of pre-paid SIM cards has been introduced - to encourage the responsible use of mobile phones in Brunei. The country's Authority for Info-Communications Technology Industry, AiTi, said that the initiative is consistent with regional and international practices. The need to facilitate investigations by law enforcement agencies, responsible usage by the public and business consideration of mobile service providers were taken into account.

Those intended to register are asked to bring along their ID cards and. registrations can be made at all DSTCom and B-Mobile counters in all four districts during working hours. Unregistered numbers will be deactivated after July, the deadline for the new rule.

 

A kitchen gas explosion seriously injure a man and damage neighbour’s cars

 
 

A man was badly burnt after a gas explosion resulting from a gas leak at his home in Kampong Membarong-Lumapas. He is a 41 years old Awang Haji Lazim bin Haji Nayan., now receiving treatment at the Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha hospital.

The explosion ignited a fire that burn the victim clothes and damaged the kitchen and part of the house. Four of the neighbour's vehicles parked across the kitchen was smashed by the impact of the explosion however but there was no other human injuries.

 

The house is occupied by eleven people including two amahs. The house owner Hajah Sinda binti Haji Nayan who happened to be asleep on the first floor of the house was awoken by a loud shout from one of the amahs.

 

Six people detain over the case of dead body found in Kampong Belimbing

 
 

Three men and three women are remanded in police custody to assist police in their investigation into the where a body was found last Saturday in Kampong Belimbing, Subok. The six, five Filipinos and a local man, appeared in court yesterday, Wednesday.

The police have confirmed that the dead was a 48-year old Filipina woman, Jovita Zapanta, who lived in Berakas and had been staying in Brunei for more than a year. Her body, with injury to the left arm and a finger of the right hand, was found wrapped up in plastic and cloth at a rubbish dump in Simpang 674, Kampong Belimbing, late last Saturday afternoon.

 

Pathologists confirmed that the victim had been dead for more than two days. The six are being detained for 14 days under the Crime Penal Code on intent to murder.

 

New Year of Hijrah brings in 10 newlucky babies

 
 

The new year of Hijrah brings new hopes for couples who ushered in the Islamic calendar in a very special way - with a new member in their family. A total of 10 babies were born on the first of Muharram 1427 Hijrah. In the Brunei Muara District, 9 babies - 4 baby boys and 5 baby girls were born on the first day of Muharram. The first baby, a baby boy was born at 14 minutes past seven on Monday evening, on the 1st of Muharram 1427 Hijrah corresponding to the 30th of January. The infant was the third child for Dayang Suarini bte Mohd. Ali and Mohd Bukharimin bin Haji Abdul Gawahin from Kampong Lambak Kanan.

As a show of acknowledgment to the new-born and their parents, the Ministry of Religious Affairs and several financial institutions presented gifts to each of them. Each baby received a hamper containing clothes and baby-care products.

 
 

Islamic Bank of Brunei Darussalam Berhad, IBBD donated the Al-Wadiah Account with one thousand dollars for each baby. While the Islamic Brunei Trust Fund, TAIB, contributed Simanja Saving Accounts worth 500 dollars. The gifts were handed over by the Minister of Religious Affairs, Pehin Dato Seri Utama Doctor Ustaz Haji Mohd. Zain and wife, the Minister of Health Pehin Dato Paduka Haji Suyoi and wife; the Deputy Minister of Religious Affairs, Pehin Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Badaruddin and wife and the Deputy Minister of Health Pehin Dato Paduka Haji Hazair and wife.


Meanwhile, the handing over of gifts also took place at the Pengiran Muda Mahkota Pengiran Muda Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah Hospital in Tutong town for a newly born baby boy. Weighing 2.21 kilogrammes, the baby is the first child of Dayang Jamilahwati bte Haji Jamil and Awang Mezedi bin Haji Othman. The infant was born at 5.45 early Tuesday morning. On hand to present the gifts were the Tutong District Officer Awang Abdul Mutalib bin Haji Md Idris and wife.
