Brunei Darussalam has
achieved the Global Health Indicators of the World Health Organization
in several diseases elimination and other health areas. But in spite of
this, there still remain trends which continue to cause concern, such as
heart-related diseases, cancer and diabetes which are among the biggest
killers in the country. Lamenting over this today, the Minister of
Health spoke of the increasing number of food poisoning cases and
smoking in public places.
Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Paduka Haji Suyoi
stated the matter at the launch of a course and Guide Book on Safety and
Healthy Food for Managers and Food Operators. The minister said based on
the global Health Indicators, the Brunei health status has shown an
increase over the past 20 years. The main cause of death in the country
is no longer caused by infectious diseases as experienced by developing
countries. Statistics from the past ten years, from 1995 to 2004 had
shown that non-infectious diseases such as heart-coronary, cancer and
diabetes are among the five main causes of deaths in the country. The
Minister of Health also touched on an increasing number of
food-poisoning cases reported in the country. He stated that last year
alone, 191 cases were reported compared to only 69 cases in 2004. More
than 250 food-borne diseases have been identified such as diarrhoea,
cholera, hepatitis A, Botulism and food-poisoning which can cause death
if no immediate medication is taken. The minister also reminded that
among the important factors to attract tourists into the country is
cleanliness of food and eating outlets. According to the minister, out
of more than two thousand eating premises inspected last year, 25
percent had not met the satisfactory deadline, and one percent was
instructed to close down. |
Yang Berhormat Pehin
also urged restaurant managers to take into account on environmental
cleanliness for the convenience of their customers such as in ensuring
that the premises are free from cigarette smoke. According to the
Minister, such matters should be given attention by restaurant managers
who should protect customers from being affected by cigarette smokes and
smokers. The 2005 Tobacco Order which was published last year, will soon
be enforced. The Order forbids smoking in public places including
restaurants and food stalls.
Meanwhile, a Health and Safety Food Guide Book was also launched by the
minister and this will become guidelines and reference to restaurant
managers, caterers and food operators. The book among others contain
guidelines such as basic needs of food premises, food operators,
prevention of food poisoning, insects control, cleanliness and safety at
restaurant premises and healthy recipes. |

Temburong
rice production continue to increase to catch up with demand. |
| |
|
Rice production in the
Temburong District over the last year increased about 150 metric tonnes
compared to the previous year. Last year, the district harvested almost
620 metric tonnes of rice compared to 470 metric tonnes in 2004. The
growth is attributed to the increase in the number of rice farmers and
the opening of more rice fields.
The extended rice fields are in Pradayan, Lekiun and Negalang Unat and
another additional one thousand hectars have been earmarked in the
vicinity by the authorities. The Pradayan/Lekiun rice field is the
largest in the country. Statistics issued by the Agriculture Department
showed that the number of participants involved in the Rice Pricing
Scheme for the 2004 and 2005 season in the district have increased to
184 farmers compared to 122 for the 2003 and 2004 season. There is also
a marked increase in rice production at 252 thousand kilogrammes worth
at four hundred three thousand dollars. At present Temburong District
boasts of more than three hundred and forty hektars of rice fields.
The increase in rice production in the Temburong District is attributed
to the growing demand from year to year of quality local rice namely
Bario, Pusu and Adan. Significant factors in the availability of
infrastructure such as good connecting roads to the rice fields,
assistance for the utilisation of machinery and good farming management
attribute to the increase in rice production. |
