Cleanliness at home and surrounding areas must be maintained by ensuring proper disposal of garbage

The Health Supervisor of the Tutong’s Health Department has called on residence of Mukim Kiudang to always maintain cleanliness at their homes and the surrounding areas. He said this is important in an effort to eradicate the breeding grounds of mosquitoes which caused dengue fever and elephantiasis.

Awang Salam Keram made the call at a briefing on Mosquitoe-borne diseases Friday. According to him, in 2003, eight cases of diseases caused by mosquitoes were reported in Kiudang, Keriam and Lamunin, while at the end of last year, a resident of Kampong Kiudang was treated for elephantiasis. He said the cleanliness at home and surrounding areas must be maintained by ensuring proper disposal of garbage and by getting rid of empty cans and tyres - a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

The briefing organised jointly by the Tutong’s Health Department and the Kampong Kiudang/Mungkom Consultative Committee was part of an on-going efforts to provide understanding on the importance of knowing the habit, breeding areas and the effects of the diseases, which often lethal if not contained at an early stage.

The symptoms of dengue include fever, headache, muscle and join ache and sores at the back of the eye. There are other acute symptoms such as stomachache, nauseating and vomiting as well as hemorrhaging.
