Doctors are advised to be highly visible to the public

Doctors are advised to be highly visible so the public can identify with doctors and its service. Many of doctors have been away for so long, few people will know doctors unless they project themselves, make themselves known to them. It is important in their profession, and in our small community to gain public confidence and trust, to have some connection with them before people can feel confident. The matter was emphasized by the Minister of Health at gathering between the Minister of Health and doctors under the Ministry held Saturday night.

Pehin Dato Paduka Haji Suyoi said, the Ministry’s staff need to run hospital efficiently, where the needs of patients and all hospital staff are being looked after, where waiting time, either for treatment or medicines is reduced, one which is patient-centred and visitor friendly.

The minister said they can’t be proud of the hospital or for people to have confidence in the hospital if half of the equipments are not functioning, if they are forever running out of medicines, if some medical sundries are perpetually out of stock, or the blood samples gone astray, medical records gone missing, ambulances not arriving soon enough, plus one thousand problems not being resolved. These are all problems, although not clinical in nature, will also influence the clinical outcome of the treatment. So they should not be looked lightly by any one of them. Pehin also mentioned the mission and vision of the Ministry is basically to provide excellent service to the sick and those that need attention.

The Ministry want to provide a healthcare service that is compassionate and caring that eases pain and trauma, that is reliable, friendly and reassuring. Pehin said the Health Minisitry wants the doctors to possess the communications skill to help them in their work. Patients will only have confidence in their doctors if the latter can explain what is wrong with them, how they are going to be treated, what are the risks and so forth. And for the doctors to effectively treat the patient, he must get to know his signs and symptoms, get proper history of his illness and other related problems, and skillfully examine the patient.

Pehin stressed that how often they have heard patients complain that all the doctors did not ask questions but did not exactly examine the patients. According to Pehin, the Ministry plans to hold such gathering in the near future as for allied professional, nurses and those involved in assisting doctors. Despite that, doctors attending the gathering also had expressed their satisfaction and suggested such function will become as part as activity of the Ministry.
