The government allocates 81.5 million dollars for the implementation of the Ulu Tutong Dam and Reservoir project

 

The Ulu Tutong Dam and Reservoir project is hoped can meet the increasing demands for water in the country over the next 20 years. The government has allocated 81.5 million dollars for the project.

 

Located in the upper reaches of Sungai Tutong at a confluence between Sungai Tutong and Sungai Nyamokning, the project including other relevant appurtenance works, that began in March last year is due to be completed in four years time.

The reservoir will store up to 100 million cubic metres of untreated water, which will be released at times of low in Sungai Tutong to augment river flows and meet the demand for water at the Kuala Abang and Layong intakes. It will operate with the existing Benutan Reservoir and Tutong Barrage to maximise the water availability from the Tutong catchment area.

 
 

Wednesday, the Minister of Development, Pehin Dato Paduka Haji Abdullah made a working tour at the project site. The scope of work includes the construction of over 29 kilometres of roads from the existing rural road network at Kampong Belaban to the Ulu Tutong Dam site.

The new road will also provide access to remote Kampong Belaban and Kampong Supon Besar along the upper reaches of Sungai Tutong. The Ulu Tutong Dam and Reservoir will enhance the headworks infrastructure for the Tutong system and enable further development of the water treatment and distribution system as demand for water increases.

 

The Ministry of Health says that noodles and tofu sold in this country are safe to eat

 
 

The Ministry of Health has informed that noodles and tofu sold in this country do not contain ‘formaldehyde’ and are safe to eat. Likewise the ministry informs that the products of the fresh water fish called ‘dace’ sold in cans which is imported from the People’s Republic of China do not contain ‘malachite green’, contrary to reports in Hongkong.

The Ministry of Health made the announcement following reports that fresh noodles and tofu products produced in Indonesia contain ‘formalin’ as preservative. ‘Formalin’ is a mixture of methanol and formaldehyde which is a form of gas which can be harmful to health.
 

 

In its press release Wednesday, the Ministry of Health stated the mixture should not be used in food industry and if consumed can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, breathing difficulty, headaches and chest pain. And if consumed over long period it can cause asthma, skin disease and cancer. Brunei Darussalam, however, does not import both of these products.


Meanwhile, ‘malachite green’ is a form of dye use in coloring silk, cotton and paper. Under proper control, it is used in aquaculture in ridding parasite and fungi on fishes and fish roes. However, analysis conducted by the Brunei Darussalam’s Health Ministry found no trace of the dye in the imported ‘dace’ fish product.

 

Total of 2,000 books entitled “Possessed - Treatment and Prevention” have been sold to the public

 
 

The book entitled “Kerasukan - merawat dan mencegahnya” or “Possessed - treatment and prevention” - published by the Mufti Department has drawn vast public interest. Two thousand copies of the book have been sold over the last five days following its launch recently. Due to popular demand the book will be reprinted and be made available by the end of this month.

The State Mufti, Pehin Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Abdul Aziz explained that the book tries to view in the Islamic religious perspective of what “possessed” is all about - is it an illness and the antidote to overcome it.

 

The State Mufti also stated that possession can be cured with the recitation of certain verses from the holy Qu’ran and hadis or traditions of Prophet Mohammad Salallahu Alaihi Wassalam.

The State Mufti Department will continue to publish books as part of its main agenda that include collecting, developing and disseminating of Islamic knowledge for the benefit and development of the community.

 

Religious talk inconjunction with the new Hijrah 1427

 
 

Universiti Brunei Darussalam yesterday held a function to mark the new year of Hijrah 1427. It took place at the UBD’s mosque. The Deputy Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Dato Paduka Haji Yaakub was present. The day’s programme focussed on a forum that deliberated on issues and challenges faced by today’s youths, with unemployment being the most prominent problem.

Meanwhile, a religious talk in conjunction with the new Hijrah 1427 organised by the Royal Brunei Police Force has touched on the organisation which is not only for the excellence in the world but to obtain Allah blessing for the life after death. The talk entitled “Meningkatkan Profesionalisma Perkhidmatan Dari Pandangan Islam”, or Upgrading the Service Profesionalism from the Islamic Point of View, was delivered by a lecturer from the Islamic Dakwah Centre.

 
 

Awang Haji Mail bin Haji Besar said every police personnel must know the main aim of the Royal Brunei Police Force was established. He said by knowing the objectives, they will know their duties and responsibilities and thus can help them upgrading their capabilities and skill as well how to implement their work.
 

Among those present was the Commissioner of Police, Pehin Dato Paduka Seri Zainuddin bin Jalani. The new year of hijrah is one of the major events of celebration in the Islamic Calendar and celebrated with various activities in the country.

 
 

Information Department holds a Bertahlil Ceremony at the Royal Mousoleum

 
 

Pelita Brunei, the official government newsletter, turned 50 yesterday. To mark the anniversary of its establishment, the Information Department held a Bertahlil Ceremony at the Royal Mousoleum near the capital Wednesday.

More than 50 of its officers and staff attended the religious event that was held for His Majesty’s late parents Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien and Al-marhummah Duli Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Damit.

 

The Permanent Secretary at the Prime Minister’s Office, Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Ismail bin Pengiran Haji Mohammed led the congregation. Pelita Brunei was first published on the 15th of February 1956 and circulated free of charge to the public. To mark its first edition the late Sultan consented to have his Titah Perutusan printed on the front page of the newsletter.

 

Ministry sends selected nursing staff overseas to undergo higher-level courses

 

The government through the Ministry of Health continues efforts to produce better-trained nurses towards providing good services to the public. Apart from in-house courses, the ministry also sends selected nursing staff overseas to undergo higher-level courses.

Wednesday night saw a group of seven nurses leaving the country for Australia to undergo degree course in nursing at several high-learning institutions there. The nurses will take up six special courses in nursing during the period of two years which focuses pre-operative care treatment, midwifery and cardiology.


With the course, it is hoped that nurses could add extra knowledge in enhancing their skills and efficiency in line with the ministry’s strategic planning which aims to upgrade competency and professionalism of officers and staff of the ministry of health. Present at the Brunei International Airport was the Director-General of the Medical Services at the Ministry of Health,Dr. Awang Haji Affendi.

 

A 20-year-old local women caught by Customs officers

 

A 20-year-old Bruneian woman, Nooraini binti Sapeelis, was apprehended for attempting to bring into the country 72 cans of beer. She was caught by Customs officers on the first of this month in Kampong Limau Manis.

She was fined 750 dollars or in default one month imprisonment for the offence. The goods were confiscated and ordered destroyed whilst the vehicle used by the offender was returned to her.
