Women
Graduates Association is to address social problems of students |
|
|
|
The Deputy Minister of
Education has called on the Women Graduates Association to address social
problems that occur among some students in the country. The students,
apparently, are being influenced by unhealthy activities such as drug-abuse,
smoking, inappropriately attired and socialising freely.
Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Doctor Haji Mohamad voiced out his concern when he
officiated at a presentation of financial aid to a number of students. He
said that though the problem is not widespread yet, it nevertheless exists
and it is feared that it might eventually developed into an unhealthy
culture.
A total of 421 students from 14 secondary schools and colleges received the
school assistance from the Women Graduates Association under its scheme
“Save Our Children”. The assistance is for the students to continue their
education. The function took place Friday at the Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan
Science College in Jalan Muara. |

Lifeskills with a high-level of special needs launches in Brunei Darussalam |
| |
|
A programme on Lifeskills
that caters to young adults with a high-level of special needs has been
launched in Brunei Darussalam. Apart from the current one-hour, three-times
a week therapy session at the Pusat Ehsan’s Rehabilitation Therapy Unit,
there is no other programmes available for this special group of people. The
‘‘LifeSkill Programme’’ will run for a period of one year.
The first programme will involved three teenage students. They will be
attending classes five times a week, from Monday to Friday, starting from
half past eight in the morning until four in the afternoon. The
class-activities and programmes are designed according to each student’s
needs and level in all areas of skill development including academic, social
and recreation, communication, daily chores, fine and gross motor and
sports.
All activities are planned to focus on increasing functional values to every
student in order for them to have a more meaningful life as well as towards
maximising normalization, according to their potentials. Teaching staff
ratio for the class will be one-to-one or one teacher to one student or in
some cases, two teachers to one student. The biggest challenge anticipates
by the centre is to find ways to fund the programmes. In this regard, the
Pusat Ehsan has launched the Teacher’s Salary Adoption Scheme, by which
individuals or corporates can contribute to the running of the programmes.
A signing of the Memorandum of Understanding was cemented Friday between the
Pusat Ehsan and two sponsors of the centre’s Teacher’s Salary Adoption
Scheme. Dato Paduka Haji Alimin bin Haji Abdul Wahab, a member of the
Centre’s Board of Trustees signed on behalf of the centre, while the two
sponsors were represented by the Director of Land Transport Department,
Pengiran Haji Mohamad Yakub bin Pengiran Haji Othman and Awang Lim Kee Boon
from PAD Motors. The sponsors will provide a sum of 4,800 dollars annually
or 400 dollars a month for the teaching-staff involved in the Lifeskill
programme.
At present the centre is manned with one qualified Program Coordinator,
three full-time qualified Therapists and 16 teachers and their salaries are
paid by the centre via support from members of public. The centre is
planning to employ more teaching staff to cater for the needs of students
like those attending the life skill programme classes. The function Friday
took place at the centre in Kampong Bengkurong. |

Royal
Brunei Police Force set-up a new committee to replace the Village
Neighbourhood Crime Watch |
| |
|
The Royal Brunei Police
Force through its Public Relations Unit is to set-up a new committee to
replace the Village Neighbourhood Crime Watch. The measure is aimed at
ensuring village neighbourhood programmes throughout the country can play
more effective and meaningful role in supporting police in the
implementation of their responsibilities.
The Commissioner of Police laid the emphasis when he officially declared
open the Kampong Perpindahan Mentiri Police Neighbourhood Post, Friday.
Pehin Dato Paduka Seri Zainuddin said that as a pro-active step, the police
force through its district police and police stations throughout the country
will be directed to adopt a new concept or approach known as “community
policing” which will be implemented in stages.
Through this new concept, Pehin said, every police personnel in each police
station located in their respective zones, will get to know and interact
easily with the locals under their jurisdiction in ensuring good rapport
between the forces and the public. It is also hoped that the measure can
help police to identify security matters of priority for the specific
village or area.
The Kampong Mentiri Police Neigbourhood post began its operation on the 26th
of September last year, manned by 9 personnel. The structure will soon be
replaced by a new one nearby which is still under construction. It is
expected to be completed by the middle of this year.
With the existence of this post and close bilateral cooperation between the
law-enforcing agency and the local community, the Brunei Police Force will
be able to provide more effective and speedier services to the people. |
