Enforcement agencies foil smuggling attempt |
| |
|
HAs they say ‘crime
never sleeps’. As the nation was in the midst of celebrating the
National Day anniversary, there were people who took advantage to commit
crime. But government enforcement agencies also remain ever alert and
foiled a smuggling attempt. Officers of the Preventive and Investigative
Section of the Royal Brunei Customs and Excise, Thursday succeeded in
intercepting the smuggling contraband goods into the country. They
conducted such an operation in Gadong, detaining a Chinese man of
Malaysian nationality in his twenties who entered the country in a car,
with his wife and their one year-old baby.
The officers discovered more than forty units of mobile phones concealed
in a large car speaker placed in the car booth and in their baby’s
clothing bag. Sixteen kilograms of chicken parts were also found inside
the vehicle. The price of the mobile phones was estimated at more than
two thousand Brunei dollars and were believed to be sold in the country.
The goods were also believed to have been brought illegally from a
neighbouring country. All the goods and the car were confiscated and the
suspects were detained for further investigation. The department has
once again called for public cooperation and to report of any smuggling
activities to its officers through telephone numbers 2382422 or 8714422.. |

Food-borne diseases remain one of most common causes of illness and death |
| |
|
Despite progress in
improving the quality of food and food handling, food-borne diseases
remain one of the most common causes of illness and death in developing
as well as developed countries. Food safety is becoming an important
issue in food trade.
To overcome problems in food trade and consumer safety, there is general
consensus that food offered for sale must be assured of their safety.
Hence, many developed countries are making the implementation of the
“Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point” or HACCP, mandatory. This
is due to the fact that HACCP is globally accepted as the most effective
method of food safety assurance system. The implementation of HACCP will
be most rewarding in the long run, not only for the food industry to be
more competitive in the international trade but also to the government
in ensuring food safety and quality for the consuming public.
The matter was highlighted by the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of
Development, Awang Haji Mohd. Said at a Training Course on HACCP
Verification and Auditing in the capital last month. He also said that
at present, food safety activities in
Brunei are handled by relevant authorities from the Ministry of Health
and the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources. According to the
Permanent Secretary, in developing and implementing HACCP successfully,
verification and auditing are crucial. This is to ensure that actions
taken are in compliance with the HACCP plan and that the system is
implemented effectively and is achieving the food safety objectives |
