Crown Prince consents to watch charity match

 

His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince; Sunday night consented to watch a charity match between DPMM FC and B-League Eleven. The match was held at the National Stadium in Berakas. With His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince was His Royal Highness Prince Abdul Malik.

Also present was the Minister of Culture Youth and Sports, Pehin Retired Major General Dato Seri Pahlawan Haji Mohammad. Shortly after arrival, His Royal Highness the Crown Prince was introduced to the players of both teams by the President of BAFA, Pehin Dato Seri Paduka Doctor Haji Hussein. In the match Sunday night, DPMM FC defeated B-League Eleven, 3-0.

DPMM FC scored its first goal by Rodrigo Antoniov Lombardo Tosi in the 17th minute of the first half. B-League Eleven team tried to make an equaliser but to no avail. In the second half, Rodrigo Antoniov Lombardo Tosi made his second goal 20 minutes after the kickoff to put his team in a secure position.

B-League Eleven played very well in the second half with lots of tries but they could not put up with the opposing team. Two minutes before times out, DPMM FC netted its third goal through Santos Roberto, which sealed DPMM FC’s victory over B-League Eleven, 3-0. His Royal Highness the Crown Prince later consented to give away the prizes and also the Charity Cup to the winner as well as the Man of the Match, Ito Dan, player from the B-League Eleven.

 

Princess Hajah Masna attends Girl Guides Association’s Thinking Day

 

Her Royal Highness Princess Hajah Masna, Sunday consented to attend the Girl Guides Association’s Thinking Day. Her Royal Highness is the President of the association. His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s eldest granddaughter, Princess Raheemah Sanaul Bolkiah, a Brownie Member of the Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Foundation School was present. An aerobic session together with other members of the association preceded the event and was followed by a walkathon which started and ended at the Girl Guides Association’s Headquarters.

 

At the end of the walk, Her Royal Highness Princess Hajah Masna signed the 2006 Thinking Day poster. Each year on the 22nd of February, Girl Guides and Girl Scouts all over the world celebrate “World Thinking Day”. This year’s celebration carries the theme “Adolescent Health Issues Worldwide”. Her Royal Highness then viewed an exhibition on Healthy Eating put up by the Ministry of Health.

Among the global healthy issues touched on are making healthy food choices, developing self-esteem, discovering the impact of hunger on healthy development, understanding eating disorders and much more.

The Girl Guides Association of Brunei Darussalam is actively involved in community development and collaborates closely with government departments, schools, women’s councils and other organisations offering community services and development through various projects and seminars held in the country and abroad.

Their projects among others include visits to hospitals and homes for children and people with mental and physical disabilities as well as collecting funds for various charities such as funds for orphans, or for countries affected by natural disasters to name a few.

 
 

2006 Philippine Ambassador’s Cup Tournament to be held every Wednesday and Saturday

 

Basketball enthusiasts are welcome to watch the 1st Filipino Basketball League and Tournament for the 2006 Philippine Ambassador’s Cup to be held every Wednesday and Saturday starting on the first of next month.

The tournaments will take place at the Haruns Gym Top Deck Car Park Building in the capital. The opening ceremony of the tournament was officiated Sunday by the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Retired Major General Pehin Dato Seri Pahlawan Haji Mohammad

In his speech, the Pehin said his ministry is in full support of any activities and projects geared towards promoting physical fitness, enhancing closer friendships through sports, as well as contributing to charitable and humanitarian projects. He also congratulated the newly-formed Filipino Basketball Association in the country on this first tournament which symbolised concrete manifestations of the close people-to people ties between Brunei Darussalam and the Philippines.

A total of eighteen teams are taking part in the tournament. Part of proceeds from the championship will be donated to the Special People Association in Brunei Darussalam and to the victims of the recent landslide in the Philippines. The final of the tournament is scheduled to take place in April.

 

Residents gather to vote for new village headman

 

Residents of Kampung Pengiran Kerma Indera Lama and Kampung Pengiran Tajuddin Hitam in Mukim Tamoi gathered at the Pengiran Bendahara Lama Primary School to cast their ballot for a new village headman. The sole candidate for the post was 45 year-old Awang Haji Abdul Momin bin Haji Bini. He was a former grade one carpenter with the Royal Brunei Airlines.

The Brunei and Muara District Officer, Dato Paduka Haji Mohamad Yussop bin Bakar was present at the voting. Kampung Pengiran Kerma Indera Lama has a population of 277 people living in more than thirty houses while Kampung Pengiran Tajuddin Hitam is home to 300 residents with a total of 38 houses. Awang Haji Abdul Momin is currently the Acting Village Head of Kampung Pengiran Kerma Indera Lama and Kampung Pengiran Tajuddin Hitam since 24th of January 2004.

 

UBD's Institute of Medicine records progress in training health professionals

 

The Minister of Health said considerable progress has been made over the years in training health professionals within the country. The progress includes the establishment of the Institute of Medicine of Universiti Brunei Darussalam. Its achievements in training primary care physicians and providing pre-clinical training to medical students are highly commendable.

 

Pehin Dato Paduka Haji Suyoi was speaking at the First Academic Session of UBD’s Institute of Medicine, Sunday. The Minister said apart from training undergraduates and postgraduates in medicine and its specialties, the Institute of Medicine also has a potentially important role to play in training of allied health professionals.

They include clinicians and staff scientists at the Ministry of Health who are interested in obtaining postgraduate qualifications through research at masters and doctoral levels. He added collaboration between researchers and policy makers need to be established, with the end-users being incorporated through a proper agenda setting mechanism.

 

According to the Pehin, the communication gap between researchers, policy makers and end users should be narrowed. The Annual Academic Session of the institute brings together researchers to highlight their research interests, present original research findings, promote discussions and inter-disciplinary collaborations and create an awareness of the importance of research and sharing of information and findings within the medical, health and basic science communities in the country. The day-long session was held to mark the 20th anniversary of the formation of Universiti Brunei Darussalam.

 

Retired teachers and schools staff play critical role in contributing to development and progress of education

 

Officers and staff of the Ministry of Education who went on retirement between 2002 and 2005 were entertained Sunday at the Chancellor Hall of University Brunei Darussalam.

The Minister of Education, Pehin Dato Seri Setia Haji Abdul Rahman in the appreciation speech said services, good deeds and contributions given by officers and staff of his ministry including teachers and school staff who have retired, played a critical role in contributing to the development and progress of education in the country. Their efficient and honest services respective of their capabilities have borne satisfactory results.

 

The Pehin noted that a number of retirees are still actively involved in beneficial programmes either at kampung, mukim or district levels although they are no longer employed. According to him, the Ministry of Education takes pride in the scope of capability, skill, experience and service of a number of the retirees that are still required by the community and the country in various capacities.

 

More than a thousand retirees received their certificates. Among the recipients were the Deputy Minister of Education, Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Doctor Haji Mohammad and the Permanent Secretary at the ministry, Dato Paduka Haji Sheikh Adnan.
