All
Brunei pilgrims are safe from tragedy in Mina that claimed more than 300
lives |

No Bruneians were
involved in the tragedy at the haj pilgrimage in the Saudi Arabian
city of Mina near Mekah that trampled to death more than three
hundred people. This was confirmed by Brunei Darussalam’s Chief
Pilgrimage Officer, Pengiran Haji Mustafa bin Pengiran Haji Aliuddin
when contacted by RTB. |

At the time of the
incident, most Brunei pilgrims had returned to Mekah. A few Bruneians
was in fact on their return trip to Mekah after performing the first
stoning ritual. Another small group was in their tents when the mishap
occurred and was scheduled to return to Mekah tonight Brunei time after
completing the final stoning ritual. |

Excellent
PSR students honoured |

The overall results of
the Lower School Assessment Examination, PSR 2005, have improved
compared to that of the previous year. In the national level, the
percentage passed was 89.42 percent, an increase of 11.72 percent from
2004. The passing percentage for government schools increased by 15.06
percent that is from 70.67 percent in 2004 to 85.73 percent in 2005.
This has been the best achievement so far. The matter was noted by the
Minister of Education, Pehin Dato Seri Setia Haji Abdul Rahman at the
national level presentation of prizes to pupils who achieved excellent
results in the 2005 PSR examinations, Friday. |

The Minister said that
based on students’ projection statistics, the total of students entering
secondary and form six levels will increase by the year. In view of
this, His Majesty’s Government will build nine more schools namely five
for secondary level, three sixth form centres and one sports school.
These new schools will be completed and ready for use by 2008. |

A total of 217 pupils
from Brunei’s four districts received their prizes for obtaining five
A’s in last year’s Primary School Assessment Examination. 29 schools
achieved 100 percent passes and another 29 schools that achieved more
than 90 percent passes also received awards. The passing percentage this
year for government school pupils of 85.73 percent is higher than the
national target of 80 percent. 54 schools achieved one hundred percent
pass in at least four subjects. |

Foundation donates school items to over 70 students |

Concerns shown by the
Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Foundation in extending charities,
especially in helping those befallen with misfortunes, are consistent
with the objectives of its establishment. Friday, the foundation
contributed donations in the form of school books, stationeries and
uniforms aimed at alleviating financial shortcomings faced by parents. |

A total of 74 students
received the aid that were presented by the Deputy Managing Director of
the Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Foundation, Dato Paduka Haji Zakaria
bin Haji Jeneh. The foundation presented similar gifts to thirty school
children in Brunei’s four districts. The presentation took place at the
Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Foundation in Bandar Seri Begawan. |

Youth
Department organises First Active Youth Contest |

The Youth Section at
the Department of Youth and Sports recorded an encouraging increase from
year to year of the involvement of youth in activities organised by the
department. Such involvement has produced outstanding youth with high
commitment to the country. In this view, the department is organising
for the first time an Active Youth Contest in the form of presenting
working papers aimed at offering Brunei’s youth with the opportunities
to plan and implement a systematic project and at the same time learn
and gain knowledge in managing activities. Nineteen working papers from
seventeen groups of entries were tabled in the second phase of the
competition, Friday. The working papers were in compliance with the
formats arranged by the organizer pertaining to youth, did not violate
the country’s laws and regulations, contained positive elements and a
message concerning youth in the country. Each group discussed their
working paper based on the community, education, environment, religion,
sports and physical activities, awareness and health. |

The daylong contest was
to select the best working papers for the third phase of the competition
and to be subsequently presented with relevant implemented projects in a
contest to be held in three months time. The contest offers one thousand
five hundred dollars cash for the first prize, one thousand dollars for
second place winner, and seven hundred and fifty dollars for third. More
than one hundred and twenty youth from throughout the country took part
in the contest that was held at the Youth Centre in the capital, Bandar
Seri Begawan. |

Signing
for sponsorship contracts in Premier M’sian League |

The signing ceremony
for sponsorship contracts in the Premier Malaysian League 2005/2006
season was held Friday at the Riverview Hotel in Gadong. The signing
were between the Brunei DPMM Football Club and five sponsors. Present at
the ceremony was Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Maharaja Setia Laila Diraja
Sahibul Irshad Pengiran Anak Haji Abdul Rahim, Vice Chairman of the
Brunei DPMM Club.
Signing on behalf of Brunei DPMM Club were its manager, Awang Haji Eady
and the Club’s Marketing Officer, Awang Haji Momin. The five sponsors
are Sri Sentosa, Royal Brunei Airlines, Maju Motor Company, DST
Communication Sendirian Berhad and Riverview Hotel.
