PEKIRA
urges to remain active and dynamic |

The Former
Government Employees’ Association, PEKIRA, is urged to remain active
and dynamic. PEKIRA members should also be grateful to Allah the
Almighty for bestowing them with long life. These were remarks by
the Deputy Minister of Religious Affairs at a Hari Raya Adil Adha
get-together for members of the association, Sunday. |

Pehin Dato Seri Setia
Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin also advised the ex-government employees to
prepare the young generation with imperative values. As veterans with
vast experiences, they should impart their knowledge in religion and
culture to the country’s youth as long as it does not contradict their
faith. There was also a motivation talk. |

PEKIRA was formed in
1996 and has around four hundred members. Currently, there are more than
seven thousand government pensioners. |

Indian
national found dead of stab wounds at roadside in Berakas |

The Royal Brunei Police
Force is seeking assistance from members of the public in its
investigation into the death of an Indian national early on Sunday
morning. The man was found dead, allegedly due to stab wounds, at a
roadside in Berakas.

The Royal Brunei Police
Force confirmed that the body has been sent to the Raja Isteri Pengiran
Anak Saleha Hospital in Bandar Seri Begawan for a post mortem to
determine the cause of death. Shortly after the discovery of the body,
several people were detained for investigation.
To help the police investigate the case, anyone who had information
regarding the incident is asked to come forward, or call the police
through 2459518 or hotline 993. |

Government agencies are
urged to continuously upgrade the quality of service, adopt positive
attitude, efficient and dedicated in executing their duties. The staff
should be trustworthy and free of corruption and from misuse of power.

The Permanent Secretary
at the Prime Minister’s Office, Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Abdul Hamid
laid the emphasis at the launch of the Information Day for Mukim Kota
Batu, Sunday. The event is an annual affair of the Information
Department. |

There was dialogue sessions
with residents of several mukim and villages that dealt mostly on permission
of approval for the erection of speed limit signboards reminding motorists
to proceed with caution especially during nighttime on roads in Mukim Kota
Batu.
Issues pertaining to sewerage and embankments were also discussed at length.
Residents want ditches alongside roads be upgraded to concrete canals to
facilitate the flow of water especially during heavy downpours. Police
control posts are also required for safeguarding properties in the mukim.
Suggestions were also forwarded for the building of a multipurpose hall
where the community could hold religious, social, sports and cultural
activities. |

UBD hosts
Second Inter-Varsity ASEAN Quran Reading Competition |

The Universiti Brunei
Darussalam is host to the Second Inter-Varsity ASEAN Quran Reading
Competition. It was opened last night by the Vice Chancellor of UBD,
Dato Paduka Doctor Haji Ismail.
Fifteen universities from ASEAN member countries including host Brunei
are taking part in the three-day competition. Last night, four qari and
three qariah showed their capability in reading the Holy Verses.
Tonight, nine other readers will demonstrate their talent. The
competition is being held at the Chancellor Hall of UBD. |

Brunei
DPMM FC goes down to Sarawak in away match |

|
Brunei DPMM FC went
down to Sarawak 0-3 in an away match last night at the Petrajaya Stadium
in Kuching. The host team scored two goals through Mohamad Junaidi Adly
in the 12th minute and by Gilbert Casidi at the final minute of the
first half of the match.
In the second half,
Brunei DPMM FC made several futile attempts against Sarawak which was
reduced to 10 players. The final goal for Sarawak was scored by Sharin
Majid in the 28th minute. In the next away match, Brunei DPMM FC will
play against Terengganu on the 22nd of this month. |

Tutong
holds charity walkathon to collect money for Pakistan Relief Fund

The Pakistan
Humanitarian Earthquake Relief Fund in the Tutong District has collected
more than three thousand dollars through contributions from the
government and private sectors as well residents in the district. The
assistance is ongoing.
Sunday, the fund’s committee in the Tutong District held a charity
walkathon to collect money for the earthquake victims. The Tutong
District Officer, Awang Abdul Mutalib who is also the fund’s Committee
Chairman of the District underlined that the involvement and support
from the Mukims Consultative Council are crucial in ensuring that the
government’s objectives are achieved. |

Sunday’s event was held
with the collaboration of the Mukim Ukong and Mukim Rambai Consultative
Councils. The Minister of Home Affairs, Pehin Dato Paduka Haji Adnan was
among the more than two hundred participants involved in the walk.
It started and ended at the Tutong Civic Centre. The men walked for a
distance of four kilometres whilst women three kilometres. The programme was
also aimed at increasing awareness amongst Brunieans on the importance of
practicing a healthy life style. |

Aerobic,
walkathon and open day to mark World Mental Health Day |

|
Psychiatry Department
of the Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha Hospital held an aerobic,
walkathon and open day activities in conjunction with the World Mental
Health Day.
The exercises that took place at the Psychiatry Daily Care Centre in
Kampung Kiarong commenced with an aerobic session. The Acting Permanent
Secretary at the Ministry of Health, Datin Paduka Doctor Hajah Intan
also took part in the activity. |

The event was organised
aimed at promoting and educating members of the public on mental health as
well as to acquaint the public on the role, functions and duties of the
Psychiatry Department.
The walkathon that covered a distance of 2.9 kilometres was participated by
officers and staff of the Ministry of Health, representatives from several
ministries and non-governmental bodies in the country. The World Mental
Health Day falls during the recent month of Ramadhan. |
