His
Majesty receives letters of appointment of four incoming diplomats
|

His Majesty Sultan
Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan and Yang
Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam has consented to receive letters of
appointment of four incoming foreign diplomats. The ceremony took
place Tuesday at the Istana Nurul Iman. |

His Majesty first
consented to receive Brazil’s newly-appointed Ambassador, His Excellency
Marcos Caramuru De Paiva. His Excellency, who is 52 years old, was a
member of the Board of Brazilian Reinsurance Company from 2000 to 2004.
His Excellency is based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. His Majesty then
received the newly-appointed Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of
Mauritania, His Excellency Mohamed Mahmoud Ould Jaafar. The 43-year-old
diplomat has been Ambassador of Mauritania to Japan since 2003. His

based in Tokyo,
Japan. His Majesty also received the Head of Delegation of the
European Commission, His Excellency Jean Breteche’. His Excellency,
64, had been the former Head of Delegation in Baitulmaqdis, West
Bank, Gaza and UNRWA from 2000 to 2004. His Excellency is based in
Jakarta, Indonesia. Subsequently, His Majesty received the
newly-appointed Ambassador of Kazakhstan, His Excellency Mukhtar
Tileuberdi. The 37-year-old diplomat has been Kazakhstan’s
Ambassador to Malaysia since 2004 and is based in Kuala Lumpur,
Malaysia. |

Later, His Majesty
granted separate audiences to the four non-resident envoys to the
sultanate. Present during the audiences were the Minister of
Communications, Pehin Dato Seri Setia Haji Abu Bakar; the Second
Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Pehin Dato Seri Paduka Lim Jock
Seng, the Permanent Secretary at the Prime Minister’s Office, Pengiran
Dato Paduka Haji Abu Bakar and the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry
of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Sallehudin. |

Meanwhile, His Royal Highness Prince Mohamed Bolkiah, the Minister of
Foreign Affairs and Trade also granted audiences to the four
newly-appointed ambassadors. The audience for Their Excellencies
Ambassador Marcos Caramuru De Paiva of Brazil, Ambassador Mohamed
Mahmoud Ould Jaafar of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, His
Excellency Jean Breteche’, Head of Delegation of the European Commission
and Ambassador Mukhtar Tileuberdi of Kazakhstan was held at the Balai
Penghadapan, Bukit Kayangan. His Royal Highness welcomed the new envoys
and discussed bilateral matters.

Ministry
of Education sets sights on ICT in education |

The Ministry of Education is particularly
cautious and proactive in tapping into the opportunities created by
rapid transformation of technology while overcoming the challenges to
mould a well-rounded Bruneian new generation for a flawless and blissful
life on earth and the hereafter. The Acting Minister of Education
pointed these out and also said the ministry needs to prepare students
of this generation and the next to become effective in contributing to
the country’s progress and development.
The students, the Minister said, should not only become effective or
intelligent consumers of technologies but also innovative or creative
producers of technologies in the future. Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Dr.
Haji Mohammad was speaking at the launching of the First National
Conference on ICT in Education organised by the Ministry of Education
and Universiti Brunei Darussalam, Tuesday. He also said that the quality
of teaching and learning in educational institutions in Brunei are in
keeping with the rapid transformation of technology. The three-day
conference at the International Convention Centre in Berakas is being
attended by educationists national wide.

Keynote address by the
Professor of Information Technology in Education of King’s College,
University of London, Professor Margaret Cox was primarily on the role
of Information Technology in Education. The conference’s aim is to
provide an awareness and understanding on the deployment and evolvement
of computer technology in education. |

Government will soon implement and enforce Halal Certificate and Label Order
|

All processed food,
separation of food storage, and restaurants in the country are to display
the Halal Certificate and Halal Label Order in the near future. A briefing
pertaining to the new directives was held Tuesday among relevant government
departments.
It was organised by the Islamic Law Unit at the Ministry of Religious
Affairs in collaboration with the Attorney General Office at the Prime
Minister’s Office. |

ITB hosts
skills competition |

The 3rd National Skills
Competition is currently taking place at various vocational and
technical institutions as part of efforts to improve and upgrade the
standard of Vocational and Technical Education in Brunei Darussalam. One
of the institutions involved in the competition, the Institute of
Technology Brunei, ITB, is hosting a three-day competition for two skill
areas, “Electronic Applications” and “Mechanical Engineering Drawing and
Design CADD” commencing Tuesday. The Electronic Application encompasses
all occupational skills that design, assemble, repair, maintain and
fault find electronic equipment and electronic assemblies. Among other
things, the project assessments include theory questions and practical
work in the various aspects of electronics.
The Mechanical Drawing Design covers the use of Computer Aided Drawing
and Design, CADD, technology in the preparation of graphic models,
drawings, paperwork and files containing all the information necessary
for manufacture and documentation of parts and components typical of
solutions to mechanical engineering problems facing workers in the
industry. The test project consists of only practical work in which
theoretical knowledge is limited to that necessary to carry out the
practical work. One of the aims of the competition is to select Brunei’s
participants to the 6th ASEAN Skills Competition to be held in the
country in September. |
