State
Mufti advises Muslims in the country against transliterating Quranic verses |
| |
 |
|
Jawi writing is not
instilled merely for its heritage and national landmark values but it is
also compulsory in Islam. Without jawi, everything is limited, therefore
the process of thinking, research and amendment of the methods of
romanised spelling and writing needs careful attention, evaluation and
handling by experts, not depending solely to linguistic methodology but
one shared by religious experts. |
|
|
The State Mufti, Pehin
Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Abdul Aziz underscored the matter
while presenting a key note address at the launching of the
International Seminar on Jawi Writing. He also agreed with other
academics who disfavour the transcription of Quranic verses with
romanised writing. Translating Quranic verses, adds the Pehin, is
unhealthy since it can change the pronunciation where it can change or
spoil the actual meaning of the words. According to the State Mufti, it
is necessary for everyone to take such matters into account, so everyone
needs to think and examine the methods or symbol that is to be used in
the writing and spelling of romanised writing from Arabic scripts. That
way, it will not be against its original meaning and not as an easy
solution to translation for there are some words that include religious
law.
|
|
 |
|
|
The two-day seminar is
to monitor the needs and implementation of jawi writing within the
community whether in school, higher learning institution as well as in
public and private sectors. Apart from that, the focus will also be on
the strategy of promoting and strengthening the survival of jawi
writing. The seminar is being held at the Universiti Brunei Darussalam
in Tungku. |
