Board of
Directors of the Employees Trust Fund appointed for a period of 2 years |

With the consent of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang
Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, the board of the Employees Trust Fund,
TAP, announces the appointment of its Chairman, Deputy Chairman and
members for a period of two years with effect from 21st February 2006 to
20th February 2008, pursuant to Sections 4 sub sections 1 and 2 of the
Employees Trust Fund Act Chapter 167. |
|
The Chairman is
the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports and the Deputy Chairman, the
Permanent Secretary at the Prime Minister’s Office. The members are made
up of the Permanent Secretaries at the Ministry of Finance and Ministry
of Industry and Primary Resources; Director General of the Civil
Service; Managing Director of Brunei Investment Agency; The Commissioner
of Labour and Solicitor General as the Attorney General’s
Representative; Deputy Managing Director of Brunei Shell Petroleum Co
Ltd and the Chief Executive Officer, Royal Brunei Airlines Sendirian
Berhad as the representative of the private Sectors. The Ex-Officio
member is The Managing Director of the Employees’ Trust Fund. |

The Minister of
Development said a stable development hinges on efficient and dynamic
administration machinery and which could fullfill the needs and
aspiration of the rakyat and residents in the country. |
|
|
The strength of the nation’s administration machinery
especially in the civil service is the backbone of the government, which
at the same time enables all development plans to be implemented
successfully. Pehin Dato Paduka Haji Abdullah was speaking at the
Ministry of Development’s Civil Service Day 2005 Monday morning. |

Present at the gathering was Her Royal Highness Princess
Hajah Majeedah Nuurul Bolkiah. In his speech, the minister said people
in the country should be proud of the achievements of the nation’s
development brought about by its dynamic administration. The Minister
also said that, in short, residents should be proud with the efforts
made by those responsible for the country’s development. |
|
These, he added, showed the nation’s maturity which was
proven by a progressive and self reliant life style. The minister said
the people need to have a high degree of commitment in their duties
regardless of whether one is an officer and aware that the ability to
carry such duties reflect the level of professionalism required by the
public. Monday’s civil service day was highlighted with the presentation
of awards of Excellence for Operators and Counter Services staff.

School offers six
types of sport activities for both male and female students |

The Minister of
Culture, Youth and Sports, Pehin Retired Major General Dato Seri
Pahlawan Haji Mohammad Monday made a working visit to the Sports School.
Prior to the visit, Pehin Haji Mohammad met with the Minister of
Education, Pehin Dato Seri Setia Haji Abdul Rahman.

Also present
was the Deputy Minister of Education, Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Doctor
Haji Mohammad and the Permanent Secretaries at both ministries. The
Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, was briefed on various aspects of
the Sports School whose mission is to become a centre of sports and
academic excellence through sport training programmes. |

During their
discussion, the minister voiced support in all aspects of efforts being
carried out by the Ministry of Education towards achieving excellence in
sports in the country. Pehin welcomed the participation of students at
both regional and international competitions. The Sports School offers
six types of sport activities for both male and female students,
comprising football, badminton, athletics, pencak silat, takraw and
golf. |

Students at the
school have not only achieved excellence in sport, but also in their
academic studies with a record of an 88 percent pass in the 2005 PMB
examination. The School of Sports of the Ministry of Education which
officially opened on 13th July 2003, among other things aims to
implement sport’s progress and development programmes comprehensively
without affecting the students’ academic achievement. The sport school
was established in 2002 with the consent of His Majesty the Sultan and
Yang Dipertuan of Brunei Darussalam. |

The Ministry of Finance continues to conduct briefings on
finance regulation to ministries and departments. Monday, officials from
the ministry gave a briefing to officers and staff at the Ministry of
Culture, Youth and Sports and departments under it. |

The briefing
touched on matters pertaining to the budget, financial regulations and
auditing, planning of the national budget expenditure as well as to
estimate revenues. The briefing was chaired by the Deputy Permanent
Secretary of the Ministry of Finance, Awang Haji Mohd Rozan bin Dato
Paduka Haji Mohd Yunos. |

tested their physical and mental strength in a tug-of- war competition |

Seven teams tested their physical and mental strength in
a tug-of- war competition among ministries which took place Monday night
at the Taman Haji Sir Muda Omar Ali Saifuddien in the capital. |
|
|
The competition
was launched by the Director General of Civil Service, Dato Paduka Haji
Saifon. Monday night saw the preliminary round of the contest. Apart
from testing physical and mental strengths, it also requires skill of
the players in handling the rope to topple their opponents.

The contest
continues tonight at the same venue and the final will take place on
Saturday. The competition, conducted by the Prime Minister’s Office, is
held in conjunction with the 12th Civil Service Day. |

|

The Ministry of
Health is monitoring the development of the hand, foot and mouth disease
in the country. The outbreak of the disease has also been reported in
neighbouring Sarawak, Malaysia where four children have died.

The
Paediatricians Specialist at the Department of Paediatrics, Raja Isteri
Pengiran Anak Saleha Hospital, Datin Paduka Dr. Lim Meng Keang, stated
this at a media conference on the disease this afternoon. She disclosed
that sixteen cases of the disease have been reported in Brunei
Darussalam this year, one of which has resulted in the death of a child
today. She also revealed that most of the cases are among children aged
five years and below. The virus spreads through saliva, nasal discharge,
human faces and fluid from the affected person. The disease is caused
by ENTROVIRUS which is transmitted through contaminated food or by air.

The public is
advised to maintain high standard of personal hygiene. These include
washing of hands before and after using the toilets, before preparing
and consuming foods, and after changing baby’s napkin. The symptoms of
the disease are fever, blistering rashes on hands and feet and mouth
ulcer. If children show these symptoms, parents are advised to take
them to health centres and hospitals immediately. |
|
Meanwhile, The
Ministry of Health advises the public to avoid visiting affected areas
such Sarawak and not to bring children below age of five years old if
they have to visit the places. The Ministry also encourages the public
to stay away from crowded places, and to maintain high standard of

The Opening of
the First Training Workshop in Landfill Development and Management |

Despite being the least populated country in ASEAN, Brunei Darussalam
like other countries, is facing similar problem with solid wastes
generated mainly from households. Population growth as well as growing
urbanisation significantly increased the volume of the municipal solid
waste which requires appropriate and adequate infrastructure as well as
proper solid wastes management system. |

The Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Development highlighted the
matter at the Opening of the First Training Workshop in Landfill
Development and Management Monday afternoon. |

Haji Mohd Said bin Pehin Dato Paduka Haji Hashim who is also the
Chairman of the ASEAN Committee on Science and Technology also said that
the common practice of solid wastes management in Brunei Darussalam is
disposal at open dump sites. This type of solid waste management poses
health and environmental risks. |
The manpower training under the project
‘capacity Building in Landfill Gas Utilisation in Brunei Darussalam’
under ASEAN-Help-ASEAN Initiative program is in recognition to the
need for manpower development in the area of landfill gas which the
Ministry of Development has approved for its funding. Its aim is to
disseminate various landfill gas utilisation technologies and recent
development in the region for the benefits of all member countries.
The workshop is held at the Mall, Gadong.

Brunei Darussalam
hosting the 6th ASEAN Skills Competition |

Brunei
Darussalam will be hosting the 6th ASEAN Skills Competition this
September.According
to the Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Education, Awang
Haji Mohd Daud bin Haji Mahmood the ASEAN Skills Competition is a
showcase of young talents in the region in the areas of technical and
vocational skills. 12 skills areas will be competed such as Automobile
technology, bricklaying, CADD, Cabinet Making, Commercial Wiring,
Cookery, Electronic Applications, Information Technology, Ladies
Dressmaking, Plumbing, Restaurant Service and Welding. |

About one
hundred and thirty delegates from 8 ASEAN member countries attended the
1st Technical Committee Meeting this morning. The ASEAN skills
competition are to promote the development of quality vocational and
technical skills and work values among the youth and skilled workers, to
foster technical cooperation in vocational and technical education and
training between member countries. |
|
|
The skill
competition is also to encourage close cooperation between governments,
industries, employers and workers organisation and vocational training
institutions and to provide a vehicle to recognize work excellence and
develop a new generation of highly skilled workers. |
