Residents of Mukim Peramu in the Brunei Muara District were out in force this morning, in a true Brunei traditional style of voluntarily working together or memucang-mucang as the locals call it. With the support of the Fire and Rescue Department and other government agencies, the villagers worked together to demolish a vacant house in Kampong Ayer.

The house that was demolished was located at Kampong Bakut Pengiran Siraja Muda A. The voluntary work was carried out with the Brunei Muara District Officer, Dato Paduka Awang Haji Mohammad Yussof bin Bakar at the helm. The house had been left vacant since its owners moved inland to the National Housing Scheme.

Pengiran Limah binte Pengiran Ali vacated the house four years ago. The voluntary work is welcomed by the government because it helps to alleviate the burden tasked on the authorities concern in dealing with abandoned houses in Kampong Ayer. To date, there are more than 20 houses left vacant in Kampong Bakut Pengiran Siraja Muda “A”. The authorities fear that the abandoned houses if not demolished could be used as lairs for negative activities.
