| |
|
The Ministry of
Industry and Primary Resources has lauded relevant departments for their
concerted efforts and contributions to enhance Brunei tourism industry.
The contribution of the public sector, it says, is just as important as

The Ministry is
targeting seven percent growth of tourism industry this year compared to
2005. The Deputy Minister of Industry and Primary Resources, Dato Paduka
Haji Hamdillah laid the emphasise when he officiated at the launch of
the local Agri-Food and handicraft market as tourist destination. He
went on to say that the ministry hope local Micro and SME players,
specifically out food processors and handicrafts entrepreneurs will
capitalize on the opportunities, made possible by the Local Agri-food
and Handicraft Market and to innovatively participate in this
partnership not only in promoting the Market as an additional Brunei’s
Tourist Destination but also to use the weekend market as a venue to
generate additional income through their creativities in handicraft and
agricultural production, thus laying the ground work for Brunei Export
Drive.
The Local Agri-Food
and Handicraft Market is organised by the Agriculture Department in
collaboration with the Tourist Department of the Ministry of Industry
and Primary Resources as well as the Cultural Section at the Ministry of
Culture, Youth and Sports. About thirty agri-food vendors are taking
part to promote and exhibit local products such as crackers, biscuits,
cakes and local chili sauce to name a few.
In the
Handicrafts category, products such as kain tenunan Brunei, batik,
souvenirs, embroidery, songkok and paintings are also on display. Among
the objectives of the establishment of the market are to facilitate the
promotion of locally processed food products as well as handicrafts and
at the same time establishing another tourist destination.
The market, held
at the Horticulture Business Centre in Rimba Gadong, is open every
Friday, Saturday and Sunday from eight in the morning to six in the
afternoon, while the Brunei traditional Cultural shows featuring the
entire four district’s traditional heritage will also be showcased on
these days. The Local Agri-Food and Handicraft Market has been in
