Crown Prince grants audience to new High Commissioner of Singapore

 

 

His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office, has consented to receive in audience the new Republic of Singapore High Commissioner to Brunei Darussalam, His Excellency Joseph K.H. Koh.  The audience took place at Istana Nurul Iman.

His Excellency Joseph K.H. Koh presented his letter of Credential to His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam on the 7th of this month. Present during the audience was the Permanent Secretary at the Prime Minister’s Office, Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Abu Bakar.

 
 

Brunei attends 18th Commonwealth Games Sports Ministers Meeting

 

Brunei Darussalam joined 70 other Sports Ministers from Commonwealth countries in attending the 18th Commonwealth Games Sports Ministers Meeting in Australia.  Brunei Darussalam was represented at the meeting by the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Retired Major General Pehin Dato Seri Pahlawan Haji Mohammad.  

The meeting, at a hotel in Melbourne, was officiated at by the Secretary General of the Commonwealth Sports Ministers Meeting, Mr. Don Mckinnon.

 

Development of Malay Language and its literature is responsibility of all parties concerned

 
 

The Deputy Minister of Religious Affairs, Pehin Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin in his keynote address at the 45th MABBIM Conference and the 11th South-East Asian Literature Council, MASTERA, and Seminar on Language and Literature, Tuesday, said as one of the major languages in the world, the Malay Language, has become part of the human traditional heritage.  

Therefore, said the Deputy Minister, all concerned parties are responsible to develop the language and its literature.  The Deputy Minister also underlined that the Malay Language undoubtedly stands as one of the major languages in the world due to it is the fourth biggest usage worldwide after Chinese, English and Spanish with around 250 million speakers.  The Pehin said that after independence, every member country faced the fact that the struggle as independent nations doesn’t end.  The benefit of independence will be completed with a strong nation and harmonised community.  

 
 

The seminar discussed worrying challenges towards the development of language and literature of the Malay/Indonesian and how MABBIM and MASTERA look for approaches and strategies in promoting the language and literature so their survival will not be affected.  The seminar was held at a hotel in Berakas.

 

Pakistani Humanitarian Fund collects more donations

 

The Pakistani Earthquake Humanitarian Fund to date has collected more than one hundred and ninety-seven thousand dollars.  The collections do not include contributions through SMS Brunei Prihatin.  The latest donation came in Tuesday, from officers and staff of the Ministry of Home Affairs and the departments under it. 

The Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Home Affairs, Dato Seri Setia Haji Yusof bin Haji Ismail handed over the twenty thousand and six hundred dollars donation to the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, Awang Haji Jemat bin Haji Ampal.

 

Sukuk Al-Ijarah Programme launches

 
 

Brunei Darussalam has launched the country’s Dollar Short Term Sukuk Al-Ijarah Programme.  In connection with the launching, His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam has consented to the introduction and amendment of several laws, namely the Insurance Order 2006; the Banking Order 2006; the Hire Purchase Order 2006; and Finance Companies Amendment Order 2006.  The Second Minister of Finance, Pehin Dato Paduka Haji Abdul Rahman who was the guest of honour at the launching said that the issuance of the Sukuk Al-Ijarah in Brunei Darussalam is the first step in the effort to develop capital market in Brunei Darussalam and is not primarily to source additional government funding.  According to the Minister, the introduction of this country’s own capital market will further enhance Brunei Darussalam’s position in the growing regional and Global Islamic Financial Community.


With the launching of the programme, a number of agreements were signed to facilitate the government in implementing it.  One of the agreements was signed between the Sukuk Holding Properties and the Sukuk Brunei.  Signing on behalf of the Sukuk Holding Properties was the Minister of Development, Pehin Dato Paduka Haji Abdullah; while signing on behalf of Sukuk Brunei was the Deputy Minister of Development, Dato Paduka Doctor Haji Mat Suny.  Another agreement was also signed between the Sukuk Brunei and the Ministry of Finance.  Signing on behalf of Sukuk Brunei was the Deputy Minister of Development while the Acting Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Finance, Awang Haji Mohamad Rozan signed on behalf of the ministry.  

 
 

The agreement between Sukuk Brunei and primary dealers was also held.  Signing on behalf of the Sukuk Brunei was the Deputy Minister of Development while the primary dealers comprising a number of banks were signed by Mr. Pierre Imholf from the Baiduri Bank,   Mr. Glen Rase from the Citibank, Mr. Priestley of the HSBC, Pehin Dato Seri Paduka Haji Mohd. Ali signed on behalf of the IBB and Standard Chartered was signed by Ms. Sharlini Warrier.  

 

Choir competitions should be made as prime motivation for students

 

Apart from making education as a priority for students, their involvement in extra curricular activities should also be looked into, such as choir competitions.  The Permanent Secretary at the Prime Minister’s Office, Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Ismail bin Pengiran Haji Mohammed was speaking at 13th Final Patriotic Song Competition for Secondary Schools and Colleges 2006 in conjunction with the 22nd National Day celebration, Tuesday.  The competition was held at the Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College.

 
 

The Permanent Secretary said that the competition should be made as a prime motivation for students.  Winning or losing, he added, is secondary.  The Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College was adjudged champion, with Berakas Secondary School in second place and the Sayiddina Abu Bakar Secondary School came third.

 

National Day Open Bowling Championship ends with presentation of prizes to winners

 

The 22nd National Day Open Bowling Championship that was held from the 25th of last month ended last night with the presentation of prizes to the winners.  The Wira Amal Bowlers was the champion in the Ladies Doubles’ Event and the Power Puff Mums emerged the winner in the Ladies Team Event.  In the Ladies Open Category, the winner was Dayangku Nadia Nabila binti Pengiran Abu Samah.  Prizes were presented by the wife of the Acting Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Datin Hajah Suzana.

The Acting Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Dato Paduka Haji Yakub presented the prizes to the male winners.  In the Men’s Doubles Category, the winner was the Kerambit ‘A’, while the Ketam Kaluk team emerged as the champion in the Men’s Team Event Category.  Awangku Mohamad Aizat bin Pengiran Abu Samah came out top in the Men’s Open Masters Category.  He received a cash prize of one thousand dollars and a trophy. 

Dato Haji Yakub also presented incentive prizes to bowlers who have participated in the Borneo Games in Sabah last December.  They have collected four gold medals, three silver medals and three bronze medals in the Men’s Singles, Men’s Trio, Men’s Masters, Men’s Doubles and Men’s Team.  The Bowling Championship was conducted by the Brunei Darussalam Tenpin Bowling Congress. 

 

Ministry of Development team wins Final Inter-Ministries Badminton Championship

 

The team from the Ministry of Development won the Final Inter-Ministries Badminton Championship after defeating the team from the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources, 3-2.  The Minister of Industry and Primary Resources, Pehin Dato Seri Setia Dr. Haji Ahmad was one of the competitors in the Double Event.  Presenting the prizes was the Permanent Secretary at the Prime Minister’s Office, Dato Paduka Haji Sulaiman bin Haji Ismail.  

Present were Permanent Secretaries, Deputy Permanent Secretaries, Director General and Assistant Director General of the Civil Service.  The championship was organised by the Ministry of Defence and was inconjunction with the 12th Civil Service Day.  The championship was held at the Youth Centre in the capital last night.
