Home Ministry launches ‘Program Muhibbah’ to assess development in villages

 

 

Bridging the gap between the government and the rakyat is one aim of the “Program Muhibbah Menyusur Mukim”.  In this regard, a group of officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs paid a visit to one of the mukims in the Belait District to assess its development provided by the government for the interest of the rakyat there.  Officials were led by the Minister of Home Affairs, Pehin Dato Paduka Haji Adanan, who spent the night at Mukim Sukang in interior Belait.

The goodwill visit enabled government representatives to take a first hand look at the infrastructural development as well as the residents’ welfare.  Mukim Sukang covers an area of 814 square kilometres.  The Minister and his delegation also met with participants of the Youth Camping Program being held at the village.  The Youth Project is organised jointly by the Mukim Sukang Consultative Council and the Belait Youth Association “PEMBELA”

 

Earlier, the delegation held a dialogue with Mukim Sukang residents, enabling residents to voice their problems, and for officials to try to overcome their predicaments toward improving the condition of the village as well as their welfare.  Among the issues raised at the meeting was national registration.

 

Meanwhile, the Acting Belait District Officer, Awang Haji Mohammad bin Haji Abdul Rahman, handed over the key of Rumah Muhibbah to the Acting Assistant Director of Islamic Dakwah Centre, Awang Haji Mohammad bin Garing.  The house was built by the District Office for use of village community for religious activities.

 

Visiting Malaysian Minister tours places of interests in Temburong

 

The Malaysian Minister of Culture, Arts and Heritage, Datuk Seri Utama Doctor Rais Yatim was in the Temburong District, Sunday, touring places of interests.  The Minister was accompanied throughout the visit by the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Retired Major General Pehin Dato Seri Pahlawan Haji Mohammad.

 
 

Among the places visited by Datuk Doctor Rais Yatim and delegation were the Tamu Muhibbah Aneka Selera at Pekan Bangar, the Bukit Batu Apoi Recreation Park and the Brunei Darussalam Outward Bound. The Malaysian Minister of Culture, Arts and Heritage is leading his country’s delegation involved in the Titian Budaya, a joint cultural project between Malaysia and Brunei Darussalam.

 

Schools remain close for one more week

 

Under the advice of the Ministry of Health and as a precautionary measure in the containment of the Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease in the country, the Ministries of Education, Religious Affairs and the Culture, Youths and Sports announced that school holidays for all primary schools, religious and Arabic Preparatory Schools, including Day-Care Centres have been extended another week from today until the 2nd of April.

Meanwhile, the Second Term for Secondary Schools begin today except for the Rimba and Berakas Secondary Schools, which will remain closed another week.  This closure is to enable renovation and cleaning.  The ministries will keep the public informed.

 
 

Over two hundred people attend public health care lecture

 
 

A public health care lecture entitled “Orthopaedic Surgery and Radio Neurosurgery” was held Sunday in Jerudong.  More than two hundred attendees comprising medical officers and members of public attended the lecture which was delivered by two Singaporean consultants.

The talks touched on new methods of treatment for Osteoarthritis, developed over the last few years inline with the development of new technology.  One such key area is the development of cell culture, a technique called “Autologous Cartilage Transplantation”, using a patient’s own cells to grow more similar cells in the laboratory to replace the damage.  Doctor Tan Jee Lim said the main advantage of “Autologous Cartilage Transplantation” is that it heals the cartilage defect and prevents Osteoarthritis.

 
 

Meanwhile Doctor Ng Puay Yong said that because Stereo tactic radio surgery is so accurate, it allows a higher dose of radiation to be given with more sparing of normal brain than can be achieved with conventional radiotherapy techniques.  The lecture was organised by HZA Medical Referral Agency Services which represented Parkway Group Healthcare from Singapore.

 

Awang Haji Musa bin Haji Tahir, new Ketua Kampung of Sengkurong ‘B’

 
 

Some one thousand and three hundred residents of Kampung Sengkurong ‘B’ aged eighteen and above, were eligible to vote for a new ketua kampung.  However, only four hundred and eighty-one of them cast their ballots for a new village head.  The polling was held Sunday in the presence the Assistant Brunei Muara District Officer, Awang Haji Jamain bin Momin.

56 year-old Awang Haji Musa bin Haji Tahir @ Haji Siti, retired personnel of the Land Transport Department was the sole nominee.  He garnered 472 “Yes” votes against 9.  With the backing of a majority of the votes, Awang Haji Musa will be taken into consideration by the Ministry of Home Affairs as the new Ketua Kampung of Sengkurong ‘B’.

 

Kampung Sengkurong ‘B’ is under Mukim Sengkurong with a population of more than three thousand and six hundred people.  The post of Ketua Kampung Sengkurong ‘B’ has been deputised by Awang Haji Musa since the 10th of September last year.

 

Football Carnival to expose players’ talent

 

The one-day Five-Aside Football Carnival organised by the Football Association of Brunei Darussalam, BAFA, with the cooperation of the Youth and Sports Department took place Sunday at the Menglait Sports Complex in Gadong.  Present to officiate the football meet was the Second Vice President of BAFA, Pengiran Haji Ali Hassan.

 

10 teams from the Youth and Sports Department Football Scheme took part.  It was divided into two categories; for fourteen to eighteen years old and ten to thirteen years old.  Among the objectives of the annual sport event is to expose players’ talent.  It was also one of BAFA’s efforts to raise local football standards.

 

Six teams take part in Melabau Cup Top Spinning Championship

 

Top-spinning has become a traditional game in Brunei with high national values to elevate the Malay status.  The Special Duties Officer at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports made the remarks at the opening of the Melabau Cup Top Spinning Championship.

According to Awang Haji Sumadi bin Sukaimi, top spinning generates educational qualities.  Top-making teaches the people to identify tree species, learn science, mathematics and calculations.  Six teams took part in the championship, the first of its kind organised by Pasukan Gasing Manggis Satu and National Top Spinning Federation. Among the objective is to preserve the game and popularise it among the young generation at the national level.  It will kick-off on the 9th of next month.

 

Softball Championship to vie for President’s Trophy ends

 

The Softball Championship to vie for the President of the Brunei Amateur Softball and Baseball Association Trophy ended Sunday at the Jerudong Park and Polo Club.  PLK Zombies emerged champions in Group A with twelve points.  The Zombies recorded forty-eight runs and were the overall winners of all four games.  The championship began on the 23rd of this month.

Coca-Cola Gunners won in the Group B category also with twelve points.  They made thirty-four runs and won all the four games.  The championship, an annual event of the Brunei Amateur Softball and Baseball Association, aimed at attracting more public interest in the sport.
