His Majesty is in Abu Dhabi for a three-day state visit to UAE

 
 

His Majesty Paduka Seri Baginda Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam is in the United Arab Emirates for a three-day state visit.  His Majesty was greeted upon arrival at the Abu Dhabi International Airport by Abu Dhabi’s Crown Prince, His Highness Sheikh Mohammad bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, who is also the Deputy Chief Commander of the Armed Forces and the Chairman of the United Arab Emirates “MAJLIS EKSEKUTIF DIWAN”.

Also present to greet His Majesty were the UAE’s Cabinet Ministers and Brunei Darussalam’s Ambassador to the country, His Excellency Dato Paduka Haji Adnan bin Haji Zainal.  His Majesty was later entertained to a luncheon hosted by His Highness Sheikh Mohammad bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, in honour of His Majesty’s visit.  The luncheon was held at the Armed Forces’ Officers Club in Abu Dhabi.

 
 

His Majesty then left for Dubai on a special vehicle.  On the way, His Majesty made a stop at the Abu Dhabi’s Royal Mausoleum for a visit and to pay respect to the Al-Marhum Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the former President of the United Arab Emirates who passed away recently.  At the end of the visit, His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam also consented to sign smart board.  His Majesty arrived at Burj Al-Arab Hotel in Dubai late Monday afternoon, local time.

 

His Majesty and Emir of Qatar deliberate on how to strengthen bilateral cooperation

 

His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam is in Abu Dhabi, for a three-day state visit to the United Arab Emirates.  The visit is in continuation of His Majesty’s two-day state tour of Qatar in Doha.

On the second day of the state visit, His Majesty began the day with a bilateral meeting with His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, Emir of the State of Qatar.  Upon arrival, His Majesty was welcomed by His Highness Sheikh Hamad.  Also present was the Prime Minister, His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Khalifa Al-Thani.

 
 

His Majesty and His Highness Sheikh Hamad then headed their respective delegations at the discussions on the ways and means of enhancing cooperation between the two countries.  His Majesty expressed his desire to further develop and strengthen these relations especially in the fields of trade, economy, culture, communication, education, health, tourism and sports.

His Majesty and His Highness Sheikh Hamad then proceeded with the four-eyes meeting to continue their discussions on how to strengthen bilateral cooperation and discussed regional and international matters of mutual interest.  His Majesty was also introduced to the Qatar royal family, the country dignitaries, ministers, Qatar businessmen as well as heads of foreign dignitaries.

 
 

His Majesty and His Highness also expressed their happiness with the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding on the establishment of bilateral consultations between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Brunei Darussalam and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the State of Qatar by their respective Foreign Ministers.  The two leaders encouraged the public and private sectors to further explore opportunities in each others countries, particularly in the areas of investment and oil and gas activities.

Both party also welcomed the discussions on the Avoidance of Taxation Agreement and Bilateral Investment Treaties to be held in the near future.  With the hope to enhance the existing relations, His Majesty invited the State of Qatar to open up its Mission in Bandar Seri Begawan.  His Majesty also expressed his appreciation to the Emir of the State of Qatar for the kind reception and warm hospitality extended to him and his delegation.

 

His Majesty concludes visit to Qatar

 
 

His Majesty ended his state visit to Qatar, Sunday afternoon.  Before leaving Doha, a doa selamat was read by the State Mufti of Brunei Darussalam, Pehin Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Abdul Aziz.

His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, Emir of the State of Qatar accompanied His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam to the Doha International Airport.  Also present to bid farewell were His Excellency Sheikh Yousof Hussein Kamal, Minister of Finance, Economy and Industry of the State of Qatar and Awang Haji Ali Hassan bin Haji Mohd. Salleh, Charge d’Affairs at the Embassy of Brunei Darussalam in Doha, the State of Qatar.

 
 

The visit, which was upon the invitation of His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, marked another milestone in the history of bilateral relations between Brunei Darussalam and the State of Qatar.  This was the first state visit to the State of Qatar since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1991.  The state visit signifies the strengthening of relations between the two countries.  The highlight of the visit was the private meeting between the two leaders in the search for closer brotherly relations between the two countries.

 

ASEAN-SEAFDEC highlight on consideration of policy in strategic partnership

 
 

The 8th Meeting of the ASEAN-SEAFDEC Fisheries Consultative Group has deliberated on its collaborative programme highlighting on consideration of policy in strategic partnership.

The meeting was co-chaired by the Secretary General of SEAFDEC, Doctor Siri Ekmaharaj and the Current Chairman of ASEAN Fisheries Sectoral Working Group, Mr. Hia Win.  The meeting discussed issues pertaining to the international fish trade and anti-fisheries campaign including subsidies, quality and safety of fishery products.  Eco-labelling in fish and fishery products also came to the fore in the discussions in ensuring benefits to all member countries.  

 

The meeting also took note of a proposed project by SEAFDEC and a Swedish International Cooperation Agency in support of the tsunami rehabilitation of affected countries in the ASEAN region.  The meeting agreed to implement several projects under its five-year programme comprising capture aquaculture and seafood processing.  The ASEAN-SEAFDEC Meeting is a part of a mechanism in further enhancing cooperation between ASEAN and SEAFDEC in fisheries the Southeast Asian Region.

 

Brunei to host ASEM Youth Seminar

 
 

More than fifty associations, welfare bodies, colleges and institutes of higher learning from the Asian and European regions are expected to take part in the ASEM Youth Seminar to be held in Bandar Seri Begawan next month.  The seminar scheduled for the 9th until the 12th of May will be held at the International Convention Centre in Berakas.

Meanwhile, a media briefing has been held by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports to fine tune the agenda lineups to be discussed at the forthcoming seminar.  Delivering the talks on ways of garnering more youths to attend the session were the Deputy Director of Youth and Sports, Pengiran Sabri bin Pengiran Haji Mohammad and President of the Brunei Youth Council, Professor Madya Doctor Haji Hashim bin Haji Abdul Hamid.  

 

The ASEM Seminar will address political, economic and cultural issues, with the objective of strengthening relationship between the two regions, in a spirit of mutual respect and equal partnership.  The Asia Europe Meeting is an informal process of dialogue and cooperation to bring together twenty-five Europe member states and the European Commission with thirteen Asian countries.

 

HAPUA Sub-Working Committee Group holds its second meeting in BSB

 
 

In another meeting, the Transmission Pricing Sub-Working Committee Group of ASEAN was formed as a follow-up action to the resolution made at the first meeting of the Human ASEAN Power Utilities Authorities, HAPUA, Working Group Number Two on Transmission Pricing, in Bangkok in 2004.  The aim of the setting up of this Sub-Working Group was to undertake studies on third party access and transmission pricing. The HAPUA Sub-Working Committee Group held its second meeting, Monday.

The Head of Energy Affairs of the Electrical Services Department, Awang Haji Umar bin Haji Mohd. Tahir said ASEAN officials had taken the decision to develop cooperation in energy for electricity and natural gas within ASEAN through the ASEAN power grid and trans-ASEAN pipeline frame work.  

During the meeting, the representatives discussed the existing structure of the power energy sector in each ASEAN country and on transmission pricing and methodology.  They also studied the pricing models practised in Europe, the United States of America and Australia.  It is hoped such studies would contribute positively towards helping to develop a model or mechanism on transmission pricing in ASEAN agreed by all parties.

 

KB holds talks on ASEAN’s role in context of daily life of community

 
 

In the Belait District, two University Brunei Darussalam lecturers gave talks on ASEAN’s role in the context of the daily life of the community.  More than 150 people attended the seminar designed to promote ASEAN among the rakyat and people of this country.  It focused on two topics; the languages in the region and literary figures of ASEAN.  The participants heard about the usage of local languages or mother’s tongue in various ASEAN countries.  

The seminar was the fifth to be held in the country with a variety of other topics delivered previously.  The series of seminars is aimed at giving understanding and appreciation of ASEAN to its peoples in a systematic and organised way.  The project is conducted by the ASEAN-COCI’s Sub-Working Committee on Information as one of the regional agendas that is being undertaken in accordance with the Hanoi Plan of Action.

 
 

TAIB donates books for special gathering of women to mark Maulidur Rasul

 
 

A special gathering of women to mark the birthday anniversary of Prophet Muhammad, Peace Be Upon Him, is being held today at the International Convention Centre in Berakas.  Meanwhile, some three thousand books entitled ‘HAID and ISTIHADHAH’ will be distributed to those attending the gathering.  The books are compliments of the Brunei Islamic Trust Fund, TAIB.  The books were presented Monday by the Managing Director of TAIB, Pengiran Datin Hajah Urai binti Pengiran Ali, to an officer of the Islamic Dakwah Center, Dayang Hajah Hasnah binti Haji Omar.

The thirty-seven page book contains questions and answers on women’s problems pertaining to Islamic perspective.  Such a donation from TAIB among others is aimed at not only providing financial services and products based on Islam, but it is also in line with its social activity in areas of education, social and religion.
