Fisheries growth further enhances with development of aquaculture and seafood processing industry

The Acting Minister of Industry and Primary Resources said the Fisheries Department in Brunei Darussalam is fast developing, especially after the declaration of the 200 nautical miles Brunei Fishery Limits and the Exclusive Economic Zone.  Dato Paduka Haji Hamdillah said fisheries growth has been further enhanced with the development of aquaculture and seafood processing industry.  He made the remark at the opening of the 38th Meeting of the Council of the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center, SEAFDEC, Tuesday.

Dato Haji Hamdillah said in 2005, the growth output from the fisheries industry is valued about just under one hundred million dollars.  Although this value might be small when compared to other SEAFDEC member countries, it also means Brunei still have vast opportunities for fisheries development and investment.  He added, currently Brunei Darussalam still imports about forty percent of its seafood products requirement.  It is estimated that the industry has a potential to reach a value of four hundred million dollars by the year 2023, an average growth of seventeen percent per annum.

Among the agendas discussed during the four-day meeting includes the future programmes for the year 2006/2007, operational budget allocation for SEAFDEC and ASEAN-SEAFDEC Strategic Partnership (ASSP).  About 50 delegation from SEAFDEC member countries participated in the meeting.  SEAFDEC was established in 1967 with the objective to contribute towards the development of fisheries in Southeast Asian Region with cooperation among member countries and through cooperation with international organisations and non-member countries.  Brunei Darussalam joined SEAFDEC since 1995.  Through the years of membership with SEAFDEC, Brunei Darussalam has benefited greatly in a wide spectrum of activities, especially in the areas of capture fisheries management, seafood processing and human resources development.

Meanwhile, the Acting Minister of Industry and Primary Resources also launched a book entitled “Sharks and Rays of Malaysia and Brunei Darussalam”.  The book was launched inconjunction with the 38th Meeting of the Council of the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center, SEAFDEC, Tuesday.
