Information Meeting tackles various development woes

The Belait District is not excluded from enjoying the country's development plan that is implemented through several processes by priority. For the eighth National Development Plan, the government has allocated millions of dollars for various types of development in the district. These include economic, educational, road construction, ports and housing projects.

The matter was highlighted by the Permanent Secretary at the Prime Minister's Office at the Information Meeting for Mukim Kuala Belait in the Belait District Sunday.

Pehin Dato Haji Awang Hazair said that such facilities are provided under the development plan for the prosperity of the country's residents, in line with the country's development policy that gives serious attention towards the quality of life of the people, in which they are ensured of not only a spiritual and physical well-being but also of a favourable environment.

However, Yang Berhormat added, besides the government's role in the development and maintenance of the well-being of the nation, individuals and the community also have their role to play. Without their involvement in giving concrete support to the government and its laws and regulations, the development plan would not run smoothly nor be fully achieved.

The meeting also coincided with a dialogue session with the representatives from mukims and kampungs in the district. Among the issues being put forward was the condition of roads in Kuala Balai, land grants, road traffic during school hours as well as proposals on constructing various facilities in the district. The meeting which carried the theme of "Pemimpin Menyusuri Mukim" was aimed at giving information to kampung and mukim residents in every district through interpersonal activities towards government plans. It was also to listen to and receive proposals and opinions as well as problems brought up by the public for the attention of the government. The meeting was held at the Belait District Municipal Hall.

86 PSR pupils presented prizes for excellent results

Factors such as teachers, pupils, parents and guidance each played an important role towards creating excellence in school. But, inevitably, the main focus is on the pupil themselves. This was emphasized by the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Education Sunday at the presentation of prizes to pupils in the Brunei Muara district who achieved excellent results in the PSR examination.

Dato Paduka Haji Sheikh Adnan said in school education pupil’s needs should be given priority and the school's surroundings must also be conducive towards learning and teaching. He urged teachers to be more committed, innovative and creative in delivering education and learning in school so that education pupils gained in school would become enjoyable and meaningful.

He further said, teachers should be more creative and innovative in diversifying the delivery and teaching method. Teachers he added must be aware of current affairs especially those that happen around them from village, mukim and national levels as well as abroad, regionally and internationally. Teachers as educators he said, should really make school a learning organisation by practising the life-long learning. In this regard, teachers should practise the reading culture. Reading culture according to him will not be adapted successfully to pupils if teachers themselves dislike reading.

Eighty-six pupils received their prizes at the ceremony after obtaining five A's in the Primary School Assesment Examination (PSR) for the year 2004.
