ACWW meets Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport

 
 

 


Women affairs including how women in this country can contribute to the nation was discussed during a meeting between the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport and a group of women from the Associated Country Women of the World, ACWW. The group met the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Retired Major-General Pehin Dato Seri Pahlawan Haji Awang Mohammad at his office, Monday

ACWW is the largest international organisation for rural women. It is also a member of agencies under the United Nations such as UNICEF, FAO and others. The aim is to raise the standard of living of rural women and families through education, training and community development programmes. association to the country can create better understanding of other members in the other parts of the world. Mrs. Mitchell explained that the Women Institute in Brunei is a member of the ACWW which is a world body. There are around 70 different countries and over 9 million members around the world. She said Brunei WI members are fortunate in that they are usually able to attend world conferences which are held every 3 years in different parts of the world and that the women are to attend the 8th year conference which will be held in Kuching later this week.
 

 
    Touching on the coming ACWW Conference to be held in Kuching, the President of ACWW for the Southeast Asia and the Far East, Dayang Hajah Samsiah binti Haji Abdul Latif said that several topics pertaining to the welfare of women worldwide will be discussed. She said the theme of the conference that will be held from the 1st to the 5th of next month which is ‘Winning a Way for Women’ carries a special meaning to various aspects of women’s life.  
 

Brunei and Singapore delegates hold meeting in Jerudong

 
 
Brunei Darussalam is currently hosting the Fourth, 2nd Echelon Brunei-Singapore Senior Civil Servants Exchange Programme. The meeting of delegations from both countries was held in Jerudong, Monday. Brunei was led by the Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Prime Minister’s Office, Awang Haji Ahmad bin Haji Abdul Rahman, while Singapore was led by the Deputy Secretary of Manpower, Mrs. Ow Foong Pheng

The theme for the exchange programme is “Managing the Public Service through Uncertainties” with sub-themes to building up the public service resilience through good governance: accountability and credibility in the public service, promoting economic growth through the effective public service and promoting innovations in the public service.
 
 
  Apart from this exchange programme, Brunei Darussalam also hosts similar programme at the first echelon alternately with Singapore. Beside Singapore, Brunei Darussalam also conduct similar programme at the 1st and 2nd echelons level with the Malaysian Civil Service.    
 

40 best students receive prizes for memorizing Al-Quran

 
   
As one of the educational institutions in the country, the Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Tahfiz Al-Quran Institute continues its efforts to make its students achieve success and excellence in education by providing qualified teaching staff and basic necessities for learning. This was said by the Deputy Minister of Religious Affairs at the prizes presentation to the best and outstanding students of the Tahfiz Al-Quran Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Institute, Monday.
 
 
  Pehin Dato Paduka Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin who is also the Deputy Chairman of Board of the Tahfiz Al-Quran Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Institute reminded the teaching staff on their duties and responsibility at the institution that is to train its students to be excellent Quran-scholars. Ministry of Religious Affairs, as the Secretariat to the Tasmie Board and the Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Tahfiz Al-Quran Institute are quite similar in implementing various programmes relating to Al-Quran learning. In his view, the learning will be more effective if both the centre and the institute work together and complement each other in upholding the nobility of the Holy Quran.
 

 
  A total of forty outstanding students received their prizes for being the best in memorising the Al-Quran and academic studies. To date, eighty-four students from this institute have completed in memorizing all thirty chapters of the Al-Quran. Forty-eight of them are male. They are still to undergo the memorising and revising test or Tasmie in order to get recognition under the Regulation of Memorizing Al-Quran 2002, Ministry of Religious Affairs. Meanwhile in academic achievement, the institute is well known for its success in producing outstanding students in all public examinations.  
 

Two UBD students award with French scholarships

 
 

Learning a foreign language is one of the ways in which people can expand their horizons and increase knowledge on a particular culture. Two undergraduates at the Universiti Brunei Darussalam were Monday given the opportunity to put their skills in the French language to practical use.
 

 
 

Dayang Zirwattul Wahidah binti Haji Mohd. Salleh and Dayang Alice Ng Sui Fung have gained scholarships to undertake a four-week long French Language Programme at the University of Montpellier in France. The scholarships were presented by the Charge de’ Affaires at the French Embassy, His Excellency Arnaut Rayar. The students also received a free airfare to France, sponsored by Royal Brunei Airlines. During the four week-long programme, Dayang Zirwattul and Dayang Alice will reside with French foster parents and visit places of historical and cultural interest.

 

 
 

TVK receives annually Asiavision Television Award

 
  The National Television of Cambodia, TVK, has won the Asiavision Television Award for its contributions to the ASEAN Television News Exchange, a weekly satellite news exchange among 10 ASEAN national broadcasters. The annual prestigious award was sponsored by the Asiavision, a body responsible for the daily news exchange in the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union, ABU. The presentation was held in Mataram, in Java, Indonesia, during the recent 40th Meeting of ASEAN Committee on Culture and Information.
 
 
 

 


The Head of RTB’s News, Current Affairs and Sports, Awang Haji Johari bin Awang Achee, who is also the Chairman of News Group of the ABU, in announcing the winner said TVK Cambodia won the 2nd annual award because the news it offered reflected a rich variety of subjects on Cambodian life, culture, economy, tourism and well-thought-out post-Indochina-war related issues such as the impact of agent orange and the continuing saga of the killing fields

The award was presented by Mr. Sri Hastanto, a representative from the Indonesian Ministry of Culture and Tourism to Mr. Him Soung, the Deputy Director General of the National TV of Cambodia. The presentation was witnessed by the Secretary General of ASEAN, His Excellency Mr. Ong Keng Yong. Last year’s winner was National Television of Vietnam. Radio Television Brunei has been the coordinator of the ASEAN Television News Exchange since its inception in 1998.
