His Majesty takes
morning walk with visiting Malaysian Premier |

Tuesday, His
Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan
and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam consented to take a morning
walk with the visiting Malaysian Premier. Also present were His Royal
Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince; and His Royal
Highness Prince Mohamed Bolkiah. |

His Majesty was
greeted on arrival at the Tasek Lama Recreational Park by the Minister
of Home Affairs, Pehin Dato Seri Setia Haji Awang Adanan; the Minister
of Culture, Youth and Sports, Retired Major General Pehin Dato Seri
Pahlawan Haji Mohammad and the Second Minister of Foreign Affairs and
Trade, Pehin Dato Seri Setia Lim Jock Seng. |

His Majesty
later welcomed the Malaysian Premier, Dato’ Seri Abdullah. The
Malaysian entourage included the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the
Minister of Education, the Minister of Home Affairs and the two Chief
Ministers of Sarawak and Sabah. |
|
During the walk,
both leaders discussed and exchanged thoughts and ideas and after which
enjoyed breakfast in front of the waterfall, the main attraction of the
park. Brunei Darussalam is pushing tourism as one effort to establish
the country on the world map. At their 10th annual consultation meeting
last year, both leaders emphasised tourism as a potential field to be
jointly-developed and touched on increasing the flight schedules between
the two countries. This is seen as another positive step in enhancing
understanding and friendship among the people of both Brunei and
Malaysia. |

joint statement at 11th
Annual Leaders’ Consultation |

His Majesty the
Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam and Yang Amat Berhormat
Dato’ Seri Abdullah, the Prime Minister of Malaysia expressed their
satisfaction with the warm and longstanding friendship between their two
countries and underlined the importance of continuing to enhance the
close tie that exists. In a joint statement at the 11th Annual Leaders’
Consultation held in Bandar Seri Begawan Tuesday, the two leaders
reviewed the overall state of bilateral relations and noted with
satisfaction the progress of cooperation, particularly in trade and
investment, information and communications, security, health, and
education. They highlighted the importance for both countries to
continue to work together to seek ways and means to expand further
growth in bilateral trade and investment. In this regard, the leaders
tasked their senior officials to explore ways and means to expand
cooperation including in areas such as trade facilitation, the Halal
products industry, Islamic Banking and tourism. The two leaders further
encouraged the private sectors of both countries to take the opportunity
of the close rapport to further explore the possibilities of joint
ventures in third countries. |

His Majesty and the Malaysian Prime Minister highlighted the need for
both countries to continue working together in facilitating and creating
a more conducive business environment especially for the business
communities of Brunei, Sabah and Sarawak. Other areas touched by the two
leaders were the airlines and tourism industries. The leaders discussed
the long standing issue of maritime delimitation on which both sides had
put forward new proposals, and agreed on the need to resolve the matter
urgently. On another issue, the two leaders noted the signing of the
Heart of Borneo Declaration which they had endorsed during the ASEAN
Summit in Cebu City, Philippines earlier this year and reaffirmed their
commitment to collaborate in the trans-boundary management of forest
resources and conservation of a network of protected areas, productive
forests and other sustainable land uses. They also look forward to the
forthcoming BIMP-EAGA summit in November 2007 in Singapore. |

Touching on other ASEAN matters, the leaders expressed support for
Singapore’s preparations of the 13th ASEAN summit especially its theme of
“Energy, Environment, Climate Change and Sustainable Development” for
discussions at their meeting. They particularly looked forward to receiving
the final draft of the ASEAN charter in Singapore and its endorsement by
ASEAN heads of state or government.
The two leaders also
exchanged views on regional and international matters of mutual concern.
With regard to the ongoing crisis in Darfur, Sudan, as well as Palestine and
Iraq, both leaders expressed support for the on-going efforts by the OIC in
identifying the challenges and needs of the Muslim Ummah. They expressed
hope that the review of the OIC Charter will help make the OIC more
responsive and relevant to the needs and challenges facing the Muslim Ummah
in the 21st Century.
On bilateral issues,
His Majesty presented both his personal congratulations to Yang Amat
Berhormat Dato Seri Abdullah and those of the Government and People of
Brunei Darussalam to all Malaysians on the 50th Anniversary of their
Independence. His Majesty paid tribute to a half century of outstanding
achievements by the Malaysian people in building their nation. In
reaffirming the close ties of friendship and goodwill that linked the people
of Brunei and Malaysia, His Majesty offered his warmest felicitations and
best wishes to the government and people of Malaysia for their future
success and prosperity. His Majesty and the Malaysian Prime Minister agreed
to hold the 12th Annual Leaders Consultation in Malaysia in 2008. |

Malaysia welcomes Brunei
Darussalam to participate in its economic development |

Brunei
Darussalam and Malaysia still have a few things to sort out on the
subject of maritime boundary between the two countries. The Malaysian
Premier, in a press conference, said that both countries have discussed
these and made some good progress. Officials from both countries have
agreed to discuss a few points which need to be decided between Brunei
and Malaysia. |

Yang Amat
Berhormat Dato’ Seri Abdullah explained that Brunei has expressed
interest to participate in the South Economic projects initiated by
Malaysia which include Johore, Sabah and Sarawak. Malaysia, he said,
welcomed Brunei’s participation in its economic development. The Prime
Minister also touched on the issues of Frequent Travellers Card between
both countries. |

The Malaysian
Prime Minister, Yang Amat Berhormat Dato’ Seri Abdullah Haji Ahmad
Badawi and Yang Amat Berbahagia Datin Seri Jeanne Abdullah, Tuesday had
luncheon with Malaysians residing in the country. There are about 30
thousand Malaysian nationals in Brunei either working with the
government or the private sector or studying. The luncheon at the Empire
Hotel and Country Club gave the Prime Minister the opportunity to glean
on the livelihood of Malaysians in Brunei Darussalam. |

Yang Amat
Berbahagia Datin Seri Jeanne Abdullah also visited several places of
interest in the country, Tuesday. The delegation first took a tour of
the Kampung Ayer, during which Yang Berbahagia Datin had the opportunity
to observe the uniqueness of the houses and life on the water settlement
as well as the opportunity to see the legendary site of ‘Jong Batu’.
Yang Berbahagia Datin also tasted some local delicacies and viewed a
variety of handicraft products. |

From Kampung
Ayer, the visitors went to the Royal Regalia Building that houses a
variety of items inherited from generation to generation as a glorious
symbol of Brunei Darussalam’s Royal Heritage. Yang Amat Berbahagia
Datin Seri Jeanne Abdullah also donated B$20,000 to the Brunei Muara
District Charity Fund. |

Malaysia leaves Brunei after 2-day working visit |

The Malaysian
Prime Minister and delegation left Brunei, Tuesday afternoon after a
two-day working visit. Present at the Brunei International Airport to
bid farewell was the Minister of Education, Pehin Dato Seri Setia Haji
Abdul Rahman as the Minister-in-Attendance and Datin. Also present was
the Malaysian High Commissioner, His Excellency Dato’ Ku’ Jaafar bin Ku’
Shaari and wife. |

Knowledge
Convention intends to strengthen understanding pertaining to religious
practice |

The “Majlis Ilmu”
or the Convention of Knowledge is among programmes organised in
conjunction with His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei
Darussalam’s 61st birthday anniversary. The Convention of Knowledge
this year is intended to strengthen understanding pertaining to
religious practice. The Acting District Officer, Awang Haji Jamain
stated this at the Convention of Knowledge in the Tutong District. The
function took place at the district’s Community Hall, Tuesday.

Present at the
function were the Minister of Communications, Pehin Dato Seri Setia Haji
Abu Bakar and the Deputy Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office, Dato
Seri Paduka Eussoff Agaki. Two papers were presented entitled ‘Amalan
Khurafat’ or ‘Fiction Practice’ and ‘Unsur-Unsur Penyelewengan Dalam
Kes-Kes Perbomohan’ or ‘Deviation Practice by Medicine-Man’ in Brunei
Darussalam. A mini exhibition is also being held on various materials
used for deviation practices, fossils, and astronomy as well as sale of
books on religious teachings. The exhibition is opened for three days
starting Tuesday. |

BEBD hosts
luncheon regarding strategies for adding value to petroleum resources |

The President or
Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Petronas Malaysia, Tan Sri Dato
Seri Mohammad Hassan Merican, Tuesday delivered a luncheon address on
“Strategies for Adding Value to Petroleum Resources”, hosted by the
Brunei Economic Development Board BEDB. During the presentation, Tan
Sri Hassan Merican said that besides upstream oil and gas exploration
and production, LNG, refining and shipping, Petronas has extensive
interest in petrochemical downstream industries including a fertilizer
plant in Bintulu and a methanol plant in Labuan. |

Among those
present were the Minister of Culture Youth and Sports, Retired Major
General Pehin Dato Seri Pahlawan Haji Mohammad, the Second Minister of
Foreign Affairs and Trade, Pehin Dato Seri Setia Awang Lim Jock Seng,
Deputy Minister of Industry and Primary Resources and Deputy Minister of
Development. |

Through their
writings, authors or writers are responsible in recording the state of
development of community life. This is attributed to that of the very
essence of literature as being enlightened by Allah the Al-Mighty. The
Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports
stated this at the presentation ceremony for the Language and Literature
Bureau and Brunei Shell Petroleum Company 2006 Bahana Creative Prize,
Tuesday. |

Awang Haji Ahmad
bin Haji Abdul Rahman said an inspiration will transform a piece of
literature and to produce a masterpiece requires the author to have a
wider understanding of the nation and culture. Among writers receiving
the Bahana Creative Prize is Pehin Dato Paduka Haji Abdul Ghani for his
poem entitled “Demi Masa”.
Brunei Shell
Petroleum Company has since 1999 been involved in this activity in terms
of finance or other contributions. The gathering also witnessed the
launching of a book of poetry collection by Awang Haji Moksin bin Haji
Abdul Kadir. |

New filling station opens in
Kupang |

Brunei Shell
Marketing Company has decided to start a research and monitoring project
to give opportunity to local youth to work at petrol stations in the
country and aimed at increasing local workers percentage. The Managing
Director of Brunei Shell Marketing Company, Pengiran Haji Yasmin bin
Pengiran Haji Mohammad stated this at the opening ceremony of the Kupang
Shell Station of the Petrol Owners and Entrepreneurs Association, 3PSM
in Tutong, Tuesday. |

Pengiran Haji
Yasmin said BSM has prepared a few petroleum station service guidelines
to increase the knowledge and skills of the station’s management and
entrepreneurs. The petroleum station owned by 3PSM has been re-opened
this month after not operating over a period of time. |

representatives at 49th International Tilawah Al-Quran Reading to be held in
Kuala Lumpur |

Awang Haji
Ismail bin Haji Sulaiman and Dayang Nurfaezah binti Haji Emran will
represent the country at the 49th International Tilawah Al-Quran Reading
in Kuala Lumpur. They left for the Malaysian capital last night. The
delegation was led by Dato Paduka Haji Mohd. Yusop bin Bakar as adviser
to both readers, while Doctor Haji Mirwan bin Haji Mohd. Nuh Batubara as
trainer. |

Present at the
Brunei International Airport to bid farewell was the Permanent Secretary
at the Ministry of Religion Affairs, Dato Paduka Haji Abdul Rahman and
its Deputy Permanent Secretary, Dato Paduka Haji Ishaaq. The
competition will be held from the 16th until 23rd of this month. |
