Hamburg
conference aims to encourage new ASEM partners to participate actively in
ASEM process
His Royal
Highness Prince Mohamed Bolkiah, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade,
arrived in Hamburg, Germany last night to attend the 8th Asia-Europe
Foreign Ministers Meeting, ASEM. His Royal Highness was accompanied by
Yang Teramat Mulia Pengiran Anak Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Zariah.
On arrival at
the Hamburg Airport, His Royal Highness and Yang Teramat Mulia Pengiran
Anak Isteri were welcomed by the Acting Head of Protocol, Ministry of
Foreign Affairs of Germany, Konrad Arz Von Straussenburg. The two-day
begins Sunday at the City Hall of Hamburg. Besides discussion with
member’s countries, Hamburg for the first time will also host ASEM’s six
new members from India, Pakistan, Mongolia, Bulgaria, Romania and the
Secretary-General of ASEAN.
An important aim
of the Hamburg conference is to encourage the new ASEM partners to
participate actively in the ASEM process. The Foreign Ministers
Meetings which held alternately in Europe and Asia are intended to be a
forum for informal dialogue and offer European and Asian Foreign
Ministers the chance to meet and discuss all issues of global concern
which include on economic, cultural and social issues as well as new
issues such as energy and climate change, jobs and employment, education
and research. This cooperation, which takes place on a host of
different levels from Heads of State and Government to civil society, is
now a practice-oriented process geared to the challenges of the future.
PGGMB plays
crucial role in generating economic and development of the country
The Brunei Malay
Teachers Association or PGGMB has an agenda of action in economic
development that surpassed other private organisations in the country.
Aside from that, it also bears testimony and commitment in its
involvement with the diversity of economic and commercial fields as well
as in improving investor’s security in particular amongst its members,
hence playing the crucial role in generating the economic and
development of the country. This was noted by the Minister of Home
Affairs when he officiated at the 57th general meeting of
representatives of PGGMB for the 2006 and 2007 sessions, Sunday.
Pehin Dato Seri
Setia Haji Adanan also proffered that PGGMB should be satisfied with its
achievements thus far. The Minister believes that with the support of
expertise, leadership of caliber, competitive, committed with a vision
and creativity top with good moral values and sincerity and trust, PGGMB
will continue to progress, not only in the area of education but also in
the economic and commercial aspects. The Minister said that successes
and accomplishments achieved and will be attained by PGGMB set it as a
role model not only to other associations but also to cooperative
companies in Brunei Darussalam. The event was held at the PGGMB
Building in Bandar Seri Begawan.
Muslim citizens
should be able to understand contents of Al-Quran and practice it in daily
life
It’s the pride
of the nation to have all its Muslim citizens able to master the Al-Quran.
The ability to read and understanding in depth the contents of the holy
book, however, should be practiced in daily life. This is because the
Al-Quran among other things encompasses issues on belief, religion,
moral, and practical laws. The Minister of Development stressed on the
pointers at the final of the 3rd Musabaqah Tilawatil Quran in the Rhythm
and Muratal categories for Adult Al-Quran Classes throughout the
country, Sunday.
Pehin Dato Seri
Setia Haji Awang Abdullah said through the leadership of His Majesty the
Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, the teachings of the
Al-Quran especially in reading the holy book are the foremost concerns
of every Muslims in the country. According to the Pehin, Muslims should
be observant that the Al-Quran among other things contains knowledge,
education, history story of the great prophet that promises of success,
prosperity and happiness today and life hereafter if Muslims truly and
sincerely practice and implement the teachings of the Al-Quran. The
Pehin also said that Muslims also should be aware of the Al-Quran’s high
teaching values that are relevant in daily life.
Fifteen readers
participated in the competition. Awang Haji Jumat bin Nasir, champion
in the male muratal category, received the challenge trophy contributed
by the Deputy Minister of Education, a ticket to the International
Musabaqah Tilawatil Quran Reading Competition in Kuala Lumpur and three
hundred dollars in cash. Winner in the female category, Dayang Hajah
Halimah binti Haji Bungsu was awarded the challenge trophy contributed
by Managing Director of Setia Motors, a ticket and three hundred dollars
in cash. The Deputy Minister and Permanent Secretaries at the Ministry
of Development were present. The Minister of Development and his wife
presented the prizes.
Meanwhile, top
in the rhythm category went to Awang Haji Masri bin Haji Mohammad. The
musabaqah was jointly conducted by the Setia Motors Company and the Al-Quran
Aflahal Mukminuun Adult Classes, Department of Islamic Studies. The
purpose of the contest is to enhance reading of the Al-Quran aside from
begetting blessings from the Al-Mighty. The event took place at the
Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque.
AiTi Essay
Writing Competition in commemorating World Telecommunication Day
Over three
hundred students from over thirty primary and secondary schools as well
as tertiary levels took part in the AiTi Essay Writing Competition.
Thirty eight students received their prizes, Sunday. The trophies and
certificates were presented by the Vice Chancellor of University Brunei
Darussalam, Dato Paduka Doctor Haji Ismail bin Haji Duraman. Twelve
students received certificates of distinction while the rest received
certificates of merit.
The competition
was divided into four categories. The function coincided with the
launching of AiTi’s website which was launched by Dato Paduka Doctor
Haji Ismail. The Essay Writing Competition was organised by the
Authority for Info-Communications Technology Industry, AiTi of Brunei
Darussalam and supported by the Centre for British Teachers, CfBT, to
commemorate World Telecommunication and Information Society Day.
Various efforts have been done in upholding
country’s development of tourism industry
In uphold the
development of tourism industry in the country, various efforts have
been done especially from the aspect of environment, culture heritage
and for the purpose of research. With undisturbed and unpolluted
tropical rain-forest, Brunei Darussalam offering many interesting places
to the tourists. One of the places was the Wasai Bedanu, located in
Kampung Kiudang-Mungkom in the Tutong District. For sure, the
Eco-Tourism will always give space for the world research to further
find out more on the unknown environment component and fully explored.
Beside that, it plays the roles as learning process for the community in
giving and to evaluate the understanding on the important of sustaining
and maintaining the environment.
Sunday, the
Kampung Kiudang-Mungkom Consultative Council and the resident at the
vicinity held the ‘Gotong-Royong Project’ or get-together project to
beautify the area of Wasai Bedanu. Also present were the acting Tutong
District Officer, Awang Haji Jamain bin Haji Momin, Fire and Rescue
Personnel and members of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces.
The beautiful
waterfall of the Wasai interact the most popular camping places among
the locals visitors. The Wasai Bedanu is located about six kilometres
from the main road of Kampung Kiudang-Mungkom. In planning to beautify
the Wasai Bedanu, several basic facilities are currently and will be
built such as walkway, camping areas, bridge and culture house.
Brunei’s AIDS
Council holds walk for life 2007 to raise public awareness on HIV/AIDS
The Brunei
Darussalam National AIDS Council, Sunday held a ‘Walk for Life 2007’ to
raise public awareness of HIV/AIDS. More than 500 officers from the
government and private sectors took part. The walkathon started and
ended at the Taman Sir Muda Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien in Bandar Seri
Begawan.
The National
AIDS Council promotes the fact that HIV/AIDS is an incurable disease
despite the advancement in modern medical treatments. Brunei is not
exempt from the HIV/AIDS threat, although the country’s rate is
categorised as the lowest by the World Health Organisation. Forty
million people worldwide have been infected by HIV/AIDS. The majority
are aged between 18 and 39 years in which twenty million have died. As
many as 1,500 newborn babies have also been infected by the disease.
AIDS Day is marked every December 1st.
Cycling
expedition aims to upgrade skill amongst youth of Tutong District in map
reading
Youths in the
Tutong District held a cycling expedition, Sunday. The event, the
second of its kind, is aimed at upgrading skill among youths and
participants in map reading beside to forge close relations among youths
in the district.
The expedition
started from the Youth Centre in the district and covered five
kilometres around Tutong town. Ten teams took part in the expedition
and each team consisted of three members. The majority of them were
teachers from government secondary schools and private sectors.
In the event,
participants had to search a checkpoint at definite areas to obtain
questionnaires where they would proceed to various locations in the
Tutong District.
