Control of Advertisements Acts came into force this month

Regulations for the Control of Advertisements issue by the Department of Town and Country Planning take effect as from the July 1st. 2008.  The regulations will become a legal framework for the control of advertisements.  With the enactment the control of advertisements covers the whole of Brunei Darussalam, with the exception of the Municipal Board Areas in each respective district which will be under the jurisdiction of the Advertisement Control Competent Authority or ACCA for short. 
 

The declarations of both the Advertisement Development Control Area and the establishment of ACCA had been made under section 3(1) and section 4(1) of the 1972 Act respectively.  Under Section 3 of the new regulations, no person is allowed to exhibit any advertisement without the prior written approval of the ACCA.   Under the regulations all advertising agencies are advised to submit their advertisements and signage applications to the ACCA Chairman making sure that the reference number, the approval and expiry dates, and the name of advertising company are stated on the advertisements. Under Section 6 of the regulations, a fee based on the size and type of advertisement is charged for every application. This is to facilitate monitoring by ACCA. 
 

Advertising agencies are also requested to submit their company profile together with the names of their submitting persons representing their company to the Department of Town and Country Planning for record and communication purposes.   Under Section 11 of the regulations the ACCA have the power to remove, issue notice and execute enforcement to those found to be in violation of the regulations. A penalty, not exceeding 10 thousand dollars may be imposed on any person who is found guilty of an offence.

A symposium to strengthen information resources
in the country

To identify issues and problems pertaining to the quality of library services, a national symposium was held which focused on library   Besides to identify the issue, the Director of Language and Literature Bureau, Doctor Mataim said the main objective of the symposium is also to strengthen the information resources available in the country, to enable easy access to information in both print and electronic format. The symposium also aimed at to promote the roles of libraries in supporting the lifelong education. The symposium was attended by more than 60 participants. With the theme, "Libraries: The Landmark For Intellectual Society", the two day symposium was jointly organised by the Brunei Darussalam Library Association and University Brunei Darussalam.

 

     
 

A maid employer received heavy fine for failing
to pay salary

A local employer was brought before the Bandar Seri Begawan Magistrates Court for failing to pay his employee salary.

Rosli bin Haji Sabli was accused of 29 charges for failing to pay his maid's wages. For that offence he was fined 8 thousand 700 dollars. He was also ordered to pay his maid's backdated salaries amounting to 5 thousand 800 dollars. The court gave Rosli until the 6th of October to pay up the fine and salaries totalling 14 thousand 500 dollars or in default 87 weeks imprisonment...................[End News]
