Crown Prince presents trophy to Brunei Open Champion 2009

His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister's Office has consented to present prizes to the winners at the 2009 Brunei Open Golf Championship. The prizes presentation took place at the Empire Golf and Country Club, Jerudong, Sunday.

On arrival, His Royal Highness was greeted by the Minister of Industry and Primary Resources, Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Utama Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Yahya. The four-day championship was one of the events held in conjunction with His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Dipertuan of Brunei Darussalam's 63rd birthday anniversary. His Royal Highness then consented to present the prizes to the winners of the 2009 Brunei Open. Darren Beck from Australia emerged as the champion and received a cash prize of 47 thousand 550 US dollars. Gaganjeet Bhular from India was the first runner-up. More than 150 golfers from 27 countries took part  in this year's championship.

14th Al-Quran Reading Competition among mosques

The 14th Al-Quran Competition among mosques throughout the country ended Sunday with the presentation of prizes. Presenting the prizes was Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Anak Khairul Khalil bin Pengiran Syed Haji Jaafari. In his speech, the Yang Amat Mulia said Quran-reading has long been practised in the country with various schemes being formed and steps taken, not only by the government but also by the private sector and individuals.

Yang Amat Mulia, went on to say, Quran-reading in the country is being practised at large up to the government offices in response to and upholding the Titah of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam. The Yang Amat Mulia added that the world is now being hit by the Influenza A H1N1 epidemic that made it more appropriate for the nation to recite zikir and pray. At such a time, our mosques, our suraus and even our homes must be more glorious with readings of the Al-Quran. Ten readers representing mosques in all the four districts, took part in the competition. The representative of the Lambak Kanan Resettlement Mosque, Berakas, Awang Haji Bujang bin Deris emerged as the champion in the men's category. Dayang Hajah Amidah binti Ghafar representing the Kampong Sinaut Mosque, Tutong, won in the women's category.  

 

PGGMB helds it 59th General Meeting

The Brunei Malay Teachers Association, PGGMB, has held its 59th. General Meeting 2008-2009. The meeting was declared open by the Deputy Minister of Industry and Primary Resources, Dato Paduka Haji Hamdillah. In his opening address, Dato Paduka Haji Hamdillah, stressed that in the globalisation era which is more obvious and caused effect to global economy, it's certainly PGGMB was no exception to face the challenging crisis and situation. However, with the current situation, the world economy also influenced the production and industry indexes, financial and currencies markets, PGGMB continued to make efforts in broadening its development and economic wings by building a new school building to facilitate the PGGMB Secondary School students at Kampong Sungai Akar. In the past decade, the Deputy Minister, said, PGGMB has owned four Primary Schools that proved  its excellent achievement in Primary School Assessment Examinations in 20-years. PGGMB was established in 1937 and it was officially registered two years later. PGGMB is not only an oldest Non-Government Organisation in the Sultanate but also one of the oldest NGO in the ASEAN region. Sunday’s meeting took place at PGGMB Building in Jalan Kianggeh, in Bandar Seri Begawan. 

 

International Halal Products Expo Ends

The 4-day Brunei International Halal Products Expo ended Sunday at the International Convention Centre, with the theme "Halal: an engine of growth and opportunity". It received good response from the public of all walks of life. During the EXPO, the visitors had the chance to take a closer look at and tested the samples of various types of food and drinks, as well as cosmetic, pharmaceutical, banking and other products. This International Halal Product Expo also plays the role in giving opportunities for developing industries particularly for local entrepreneurs. Its main agenda is to expose to the community the existence and importance of the halal industry in generating the country's economic growth.

 

Inspection of Temburong retailed shop

The Royal and Custom Excise of Bandar Seri Begawan branch, Sunday carried out an operation to raid a retailed shop in the Temburong District. During the operation, the officers found 448 packets of cigarettes of various brands were without Brunei Government's Health Warning. Through the inspection, a man of Chinese national, aged 60-years was detained for further investigation under Chapter 1-4-6 Excise Order 2006. The arrest was made following the investigation of Prevention Unit Officer.

The Custom and Excise Department urged members of the public to report any smuggling and selling activities of contraband Custom's goods or any suspicions on the activities through telephone lines: 8714422 atau 2382422.

 

“Gaplah” Bruneian comic book Sale

Another Brunei dialect comic book is now out in the markets. Titled: "Gaplah" - it was launched SUNDAY and is now on for sale at the Mall in Gadong. Officiating at the launch was the Permanent Secretary at the Prime Minister's Office, Awang Haji Omar bin Haji Abdul Rahman. It's the fourth comic by Malai Yunus Malai Yusof to be published, as a follow-up to "Dooi Malai Ku", "Malai Ku Sayang" and "Bah Malai Ku". The artist says the 131-page comic is on sale for B$6 and will be distributed to other local bookshops next week.

 

Hazy Condition on Brunei

Brunei Darussalam is currently experiencing hazy conditions. According to the Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation, SUNDAY's air quality in the country as a whole from 10 in the morning until 4 in the afternoon were MODERATE with a PSI reading of 68. The Department advises the public to stay indoors and refrain from outdoor physical activities during these unhealthy air conditions. Meanwhile, children, the elderly and those with respiratory illnesses such as lung and heart diseases as well as those suffering from asthma are advised to stay indoors and refrain from carrying out outdoor activities. The public are also advised to refrain from conducting any open burning activities that may worsen the hazy conditions.

 

Singapore League 2009

Brunei DPMM FC in action without 3 players, Sunday night lost 1-6 to Home United in dramatic match at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium, Berakas. In the first half, 3 Brunei DPMM FC players, Pengiran Sallehuddin, Yusof Salleh and Rene Komar were dismissed from the match after being given red cards. Present to watch the match was His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al Muhtadee Billah the Crown Prince. Also present were His Royal Highness Prince Abdul Malik and His Royal Highness Prince Abdul Mateen. At the 38th minute in the first half, Home United made the first goal through Valery Hiek. Home United scored 5 more goals at 69th, 72nd, 73rd, 75th and 91st minutes respectively. Meanwhile, Brunei DPMM FC scored the 1st goal at 80th minute through penalty kick made by Ivan Jerkovic.
