His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Muizzaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam has consented to attend a harvesting ceremony of the Padi "Laila". It took place at the Agriculture Development Site of the Wasan Padi Plantation Project in the Brunei Muara District where in April this year His Majesty launched a Padi cultivation marking the start of the country's initiative toward achieving self sufficiency. His Majesty was greeted upon arrival by the Minister of Industry and Primary Resources, Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Utama Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Yahya, and the Deputy Minister, Dato Paduka Awang Haji Hamdillah.

With His Majesty were His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince, His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed Bolkiah, His Royal Highness Prince Haji Abdul Azim, His Royal Highness Prince Abdul Malik and His Royal Highness Prince Abdul Mateen.

The ceremony began with the recital of Surah Al-Fatihah and Doa Selamat read by the State Mufti, Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Abdul Aziz.

His Majesty in due course consented to inaugurate the harvesting of Laila, a new padi variety formulated from several varieties of padi and was chosen after some eight years of experimentation. Subsequently the monarch proceeded to the harvesting site to join in the first harvesting of Laila, using the traditional manual method. Taking part in the padi harvesting along with His Majesty were His Royal Highness the Crown Prince, His Royal Highness Prince Mohamed Bolkiah, His Royal Highness Prince Haji Abdul Azim,  His Royal Highness Prince Abdul Malik and His Royal Highness Prince Abdul Mateen.

His Majesty then proceeded to view an exhibition of food made from Laila Rice products, exhibitions by the Wasan Vocational School and the Philrice of the Philippines, and the modern procedures of rice threshing, drying and milling using the thresher, flatbed dryer and portable rice milling machines.  This was followed by His Majesty having a hands-on experience at harvesting padi the modern way: using the combine harvester. His Majesty continued his itinerary by proceeding to Menara Utama or Main Tower from where he watched a group of Padi Planters of the Koperasi Setiakawan Berhad, KOSEKA going about their harvesting tasks.

His Majesty then proceeded to a luncheon during which a cultural performance was held. His Majesty's visit comes about three months after His Majesty launched a large-scale padi cultivation in a determined effort to increase the country's rice production.  The initiative was put in motion in April this year as the country strives to achieve self-sufficiency in this staple food. This huge scale endeavour involves expansion of padi farms from the present thirteen hundred hectares to nearly five thousand three hundred hectares by next year in order to achieve 20 percent self sufficiency, and to nearly ten thousand hectares five years later in 2015, toward achieving 60 per cent self-sufficiency in rice production that year.

His Royal Highness added that the month of Ramadhan is much-awaited by Muslims throughout the world; a month when the Muslim ummah will spend the time to enhance their religious deeds to obtain manifold rewards from the Almighty as a proof of their devotion to Allah. Ramadhan does not only teach the Muslim ummah to value time but also train them to be disciplined individuals.

His Royal Highness in the sabda also touched on the daily routine during Ramadhan when the times for the sahur or pre-dawn supper, the fasting period, time for the sungkai or breaking the fast and time for prayers are well arranged. One of the activities encouraged during Ramadhan, His Royal Highness added, is to keep oneself close to the mosque, where religious activities are held. His Royal Highness also called on the young generation to glorify the mosques especially during the holy and noble month of Ramadhan.

On arrival at the UBD Chancellor Hall, His Royal Highness was greeted by the Chairman of the Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Foundation's Board of Directors, Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Abu Bakar and other members of the board.

This year, 134.5 metric tonnes or more than 440 thousand small boxes of dates of the Safawi type, have been ordered from Saudi Arabia, and each box contains 300 grams of the dates. The format of distribution to the public this year remains the same, that is after the launch, departments concerned will distribute the boxes of dates through the village chiefs for the public, or through the respective units for personnel of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces and Royal Brunei Police Force.

Undergraduate must understand Brunei Vision

Undergraduates are urged not only to equip themselves with academic knowledge in pursuing a certain course or field, but also to understand and keep abreast of the nation's developments, objectives and aspirations such as the Brunei Vision 2035. The call came from the Deputy Minister at the Prime Minister's Office, at the opening ceremony of the 2009 Civic Village for Brunei Overseas Students. Dato Seri Paduka Eussoff Agaki added that the Civic Village is one of the platforms that is suitable for Brunei Darussalam undergraduates studying abroad, spending their holiday in the country, as the participants, to gather information that could help enhance their understanding of the roles and operations of the government agencies.

The knowledge and understanding would make the students more capable, ready and far-sighted in making the appropriate contributions.  After the speech, the Deputy Minister at the Prime Minister's Office, declared open the 2009 Civic Village for Brunei Overseas Students. While undergoing the civic village programme, all the participants are exposed to the most up-to-date developments through visits to institutions, as well as briefings and talks at the various government agencies. They are also given the opportunity to meet and interact with dignitaries, so they would be more ready to come forward and express their ideas effectively.

The theme of this year's Civic Village, "MAHASISWA PENJANA KEDEWASAAN BERNEGARA" or "Undergraduates - generator of maturity in nationhood," is in line with the theme of this year's National Day. It portrays the important role played by undergraduates as a driving force in various fields of study and development. It is hoped that the programme would increase the students' knowledge not only about the country's physical development, but also its socio-cultural values, economic and political standing, that could help strengthen their true Bruneian identity and moral values. The four-day programme will end on Thursday. The programme took place at the Information Department in Berakas.
