Medical Lab Scientist Association holds its 6th General
meeting
Medical diagnosis depends largely on lab report
results. Any mistake in the test result could affect on
a patient's care and treatment. For this reason, every
laboratory organisation should have mechanisms to
improve the capability of its officers and staff. These
include certification and continuous education through
suitable study programmes. In this regard, the Ministry
of Health welcomes the Laboratory Services Department's
plan to use the international standard of ISO 15189
which was approved in November 2003.
This was disclosed by the Permanent Secretary at the
Ministry of Health at the 6th General meeting of the
Brunei Darussalam Medical Laboratory Scientist
Association Sunday afternoon. Dato Paduka Haji Abdul
Salam said this was is in line with the 'Quality Manual'
guide book, launched in August last year which provides
direction to achieve the ISO 15189 accreditation. He
said laboratory management should make an effort to
provide guidance to junior laboratory officials to
achieve the best services. The function coincided with
a keynote address by the Assistant Dean, Information
Technology at the Medical Faculty Siriraj Hospital,
Thailand, Doctor Viroje Chongkolwatana. The meeting was
held to elect new council members for 2009-2011. Since
its formation in 1998, the association has 180 members
and achieved a number of developments through
cooperation with the Ministry of Health including
successfully staging internal and regional
conferences.
2nd Annual Asia Pacific E-Gov Forum 2009
Brunei Darussalam plays host to the 2nd Annual Asia
Pacific E-Gov Forum 2009 organised by Commonwealth
Telecommunications Organisations, CTO, conducted by the
Prime Minister's Office and Ministry of Communcations.
The annual e-Gov Asia Pacific Forum 2009, takes place in
Brunei Darussalam, for the first time. The three-day
Forum commences today at the Empire Hotel and Country
Club in Jerudong. The main aim of the forum is to group
together e-Governance experts, e-Governance
Stakeholders, policy makers and executives in the ICT
sector.
The forum also aims to share knowledge and experience,
related to e-Governance. It will be attended by
international and local lecturers, comprising of
e-Governance policy makers, e-Governance stakeholders,
and executives in the ICT private and public sector in
Brunei Darussalam and Commonwealth member nations. As
well as hosting a panel of ministries and a panel of
supervisor controllers, a number of others will
participate in the forum and mini exhibition, put up by
government departments and stakeholders involved with
e-Governance.
Cleaning Campaign at Kiulap commercial pemises
Bandar Seri Begawan's Municipal Department together with
a number of other government agencies, organised a
cleaning campaign around the commercial premises of
Kiulap Sunday. The departments involved include Bandar
Seri Begawan's Municipal Department as co-ordinator;
Fire and Rescue Department; Water Department, Public
Works Department; Health Service Department who play a
role in rodent and mosquito control; Environment, Parks
and Recreation Department as co-ordinator for the
clean-up and tidy up of the overall area.
Also taking part in the cleaning campaign was Bandar
Seri Begawan's Municipal Board Chairman, Pengiran Haji
Mohammad Ali bin Pengiran Othman. Tenants and owners of
buildings around Kiulap, pitched in to lend a hand. The
clean up campaign is in response to reports received
regarding litter scattered around parts of Kiulap and as
a follow-up to other campaigns around town. The Big
Clean Up also aims to change public mindset,
particularly targetting owners and tenants of business
premises in Kiulap's commercial area to take
responsibility and maintain it's upkeep and cleanliness.
Bandar Seri Begawan's Municipal Department reminds
building owners of their responsibility in maintaining
the cleanliness of the premises and surrounding areas,
whose up-keep is taken care of by private agencies. It
falls to the department, to issue compounds, under the
Minor Offences Act, chapter 12, Paragraph 30, that if
caught disposing of rubbish or littering in a public
area, an individual may be fined 300 dollars while a
company or other agency can be fined 500 dollars. Upon
failing to settle the compound, the irresponsible party
will be taken to court and if found guilty, fined a
thousand dollars for a first time offence, or up to
$3,000.00 and imprisonment of up to 3 months upon
following offences. Acting Senior Municipal Officer Two,
at Bandar Seri Begawan's Municipal Department, revealed
that other clean-up campaigns will follow in other
commercial areas, to make sure they are clean and free
from disease-causing elements.
Kg Sungai Kebun cleaning campaign
Islam teaches its followers to adopt cleanliness
physically and spiritually, as cleanliness is part of
religious piety. In this connection, a sense of public
awareness to appreciate and secure a clean environment,
free from rubbish, should be instilled. Sunday,
residents of Kampong Sungai Kebun also carried out in a
cleaning up campaign led by their Ketua Kampong, Awang
Haji Marali bin Haji Matzin.
With the theme of 'Welfare with Allah's Guidance', the
Kampong Sungai Kebun Consultative Council, the Al-Muhtadee
Billah Mosque Takmir committee, Sungai Kebun Fire and
Rescue Services Department, as well as the Support Unit
and Vehicle Maintenance of the Bandar Seri Begawan
Municipal Department - this morning conducted a cleaning
campaign at Kampong Ayer's Sungai Kebun village. Apart
from cleaning up, the day's activity also aimed to
foster community relations and co-operation as well as
instil a health conscious attitude. There was also a
Tahlil prayer at the Sungai Panga cemetery.
Library Management Workshop aims to raise awarness
A Library Management Workshop, organised by Kuala
Belait's Language and Literature Bureau, aims to raise
awareness among library management and conform library
staff. The 3day workshop was organised in conjunction
with the the "2009 Instilling Reading Culture Campaign",
put together by the Language and Literature Bureau
Department. 35 officers and staff from school libraries,
government departments, the private sector and Belait
district's libraries take part in the workshop.
Participants will be taught library management methods
that include cataloguing. Participations received their
certificates from the Director of Development and
Research of International Affairs, at the Ministry of
Culture, Youth and Sports, Dr Mataim bin Bakar.

receives good responses
To contribute to the growth of the national economy
through attractive sale promotions, the Brunei Grand
Sales or BGS 2009 has received a good response. The
Grand Sale kicked off two days ago and runs till 27th
September. Over 500 businesses and department stores
join the 15th Mega Sale with attractive slashed prices.
It's also being highlighted with activities including
Quiz, logo and slogan competitions for future Brunei
Grand Sales. Department stores are offering up to 20
percent less and the Sale coincides with the months of
Ramadan and Hari Raya to facilitate the public in their
Raya shopping. At the same time, they're also reminded
to spending carefully and to shop around and compare
prices, before making an actual purchase. Shop keepers
have been called on, to give special cut prices for food

Spinning Competitions finals
The final of the top spinning competition in conjunction
with His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Dipertuan of Brunei
Darussalam's Birthday anniversay was held Sunday at the
SATENAGA top spinning court in Kampong Selayun,
Sengkurong. The championship, organised by the Brunei
Darussalam National Top Spinning Association, PERGAP was
participated by 8 teams in individual and team events.
The challenge trophy, donated by the Minister of Home
Affairs was won by the Pidada Top spinning team in the
Team category. Awang Abdullah Haji Bahar won the
individual category through the Modified top spinning
event, while Misir Beruddin won the individual for 'lunjong'
top spinning event. The Borneo Top spinning event was
won by Karim bin Bahar and the Pangkah top spinning
event was won by Haji Nayan Haji Sisa. Presenting the
prizes to the winners was the Deputy Minister of Home
Affairs, Yang Dimuliakan Pehin Orang Kaya Dewa Pahlawan
Dato Paduka Haji Awang Dani.
