First ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community Council Meeting

Her Royal Highness Princess Hajah Masna, Ambassador-at-Large at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, yesterday attended the First ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community Council, ASCC Meeting, which took place at the Four Seasons Hotel in Bangkok, Thailand.

At the meeting, Her Royal Highness acknowledged the valuable work done by the various ASEAN bodies to carry out the activities under the socio-cultural community Blueprint, which was adopted by the ASEAN Heads of States and Government in March this year. The Blueprint aims to establish an ASEAN Community by 2015.

Her Royal Highness emphasised the need for ASEAN to prioritise areas of cooperation in order to effectively implement the Blueprint. In this regard, Her Royal Highness highlighted that education, health, the protection of the environment and social issues were important priority areas. The meeting exchanged views on how the Council can address the concerns of the people and contribute towards building the ASEAN community.

The meeting agreed to recommend that education, the protection and promotion of the rights of women and children and the response to the social impact of the financial crisis be deliverables of the 15th ASEAN Summit in October this year. The meeting further agreed that the Second ASEAN Socio-Cultural Eommunity Council Meeting will be held in Thailand in October this year..

Hajat Prayer

A sunnat hajat prayer, the reading of special zikir and doa to seek the protection of Allah the Al-Mighty from the influenza A H1N1 was held yesterday at the Pengiran Anak Puteri Norain Religious School in Tutong.

The Deputy Minister of Religious Affairs, Yang Berhormat Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin joined teachers and pupils of the school in the congregation. Also present were the Permanent Secretary and Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Religious Affairs.

 

Contract Signing


This is a significant milestone for the company as this is the first time BLNG recruited female operators in its 40 years history. The trainees undergo two years foundation programme in Plant Engineering in collaboration with ITB which starts yesterday. The contract signing ceremony was held at Liang Lumut Recreation Club and was witnessed by the trainees' parents and Senior Officials from the Company.

Brunei LNG was established in 1969 and the plant starts its operations in 1972. The company has over 500 employees and more than 90 percent of them are local..

 

Logo Design Competition

The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports as the coordinator of Brunei Darussalam National Day celebration is organising a drawing competition for the logo of the 26th celebration next year. The competition carry the theme "NEGARAKU BRUNEI DARUSSALAM." It is open to citizens and permanent residents of the country.

The winner will receive appreciation prize of two thousand dollars and a certificate while other entries will receive appreciation certificate. The Acting Director of Research, Development and International Affairs at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports explained this in an interview with RTB.

Doktor Mataim bin Bakar as the co-secretary of the National Day Secretariat said the public can obtain entry form and further details from the Secretariat at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports or through telephone number 2-3-8-1-3-9-1 or 2-3-8-2-3-8-7 during office hours. The forms must be returned before the 31st of this month.
 

 

Dental Health Survey

A dental health survey has been conducted in the country showing that 90 percent of children below the age of six have dental problems while 86 percent of them were deprived of proper dental care.

According to the Head of the Dental Health Promotion Section, Ministry of Health, the survey conducted by the Ministry in 1999 identified that the dental health situation in the country was at an unsatisfactory level and tooth decay was high and caused concern. Doctor Mary Cheong Poh Hua said that on average six-year-old children in the country suffers from decay in seven of their primary teeth.

She said the public could not see that dental health can cause health problems, like those experienced by children, and that dental health can cause the roots to be infected. They can have abscess, and their faces get swollen , and what's worst is that they can be life threatening.

 

Blood Donation

The Ministry of Health announces that the Blood Donation Centre of the Laboratory Services Department will extend its working hours by two hours from nine pm until 11 pm every Tuesday and Wednesday starting from the first until the 16th of September.

The extension of working hours is part of the centre's effort to address the shortage of blood which it usually experience during the fasting month of Ramadan.

 

Sg.Liang Water Treatment Plant

The supply of clean water has risen and provide necessities to residents in the Belait District especially those who experience low water pressure before.

With the operation of the Sungai Liang Water Treatment Plant this month, it can supply 36 million cubic litre of clean water daily.The water treatment plant, located at Kampong Agis-Agis, is costing 95 million dollars and it is being built under the 8th. National Development Plan. Construction started three year ago on a 4.5 hectare site and will finish completely by the end of this year.

The plant will also able to supply water to Seria, Kuala Belait and Tutong district as well if needed. Efforts made to build the water treatment plant was welcome by the Legislative Council Member at the district as a resident in Mukim Liang
